There are usually small drive belts that turn the brush. You will have to partially disassemble the bottom of the unit to get to it. Sometimes they just come off, and sometimes they break. You can get a replacement at most Vacuum Repair Shops, and they're fairly cheap.
While you're in there, clean out any excess hair or debris that might have worked it's way in.
Good luck, thanks for using FixYa, and hope this helps.

The belt keeps breaking. Like it's burning through.

Sounds like the beater brush the belt is supposed to turn has frozen up due to debris. Remove the brush and clean all debris. At the ends of the brush will be two fasteners that hold the brush in place, be sure all debris is cleaned from these and add a small amount of WD40 where the beater brush fits into these two small holders. Turn the beater brush around these holders by hand to be sure it moves freely. Reassemble with new belt.

My bissell vaccum doesnt work even though i've replaced the belt but when ever i turn it on i get this rubber smell...can anyone tell me

Sounds like the beater brush that the belt controls is frozen in place and needs to be cleaned. Remove the brush and clean any debris that you find on it AND at either end. The end pcs are used to hold the ends of the brush stationary while it spins via the belt. When you get the brush off, spray both end pcs with a bit of WD40 and work by hand until they spin freely. This should solve your problem.

Ive changed the filter and checked the hoses but vacuum doesnt pick up ...when its on the dust is being blown out the bottom of the vacuum....i took the canister off to test the suction its fine...also...

have you check the roller brush and drive belt? It may be your belt has broke or is slipping and therefore not turning the brush.
Turn on machine and power head see if brush is turning if it is put a small amount of pressure on the roller. If it stops turning replace the belt

Sebo Automatic X1 vacuum 'check brush' light on

I work in a Sebo agency, where we sell and repair Sebos - although they're so reliable we don't get that many to repair.  What's "automatic" about this machine is that it automatically adjusts the brush height so that it's ideal for whatever floor it's on.  It does that by sensing the amount of drag on the brush.  On a wood floor, there's much less drag than on a carpet, so the machine lowers the brush as far as possible to get the optimum drag.  After a while (4 1/2 years in your case) the brush has worn so far that the machine can no longer get it down low enough to brush the floor effectively. That's why the light comes on.  There's still plenty of bristle to do a good job on carpet but, if you want to do the best job on your wood floors too, you need a new brush roller.  Change the brush roller, and you'll probably feel the suction's improved too!
Any questions, just post a comment and I'll help if I can.  I value your feedback so please remember to rate this response.
Good luck!

I have a minuteman c37115-14 MPV14 vacuum. When I turn it on the brush will rotate for a second or two and then it stops. The light indicates "brush is blocked". Any idea what my problem is? TY Mark

Check your brush roll for string (from the carpet) or other debris in and or around the bearings on the ends of the brush roll. Or check your brush height. If you have the brush too low/close to the floor it drags the brush down, telling the circut board inside that the brush spin is restricted.

Brush rolls often get lint, carpet string, and dust accumulated at the ends around the bearings. Pull out your brush roll and you will be able to take the end caps off either by hand, or with a 3/8 inch nut driver. At this point you will be able to pull the shaft out of the brush roll, and clear the debris that could be inside. Your bearings may have gone bad by this point.. All of this is inexpensive to fix, and easy to do. If you have any questions, just drop me a line. I have this manual on my windows skydrive, so if you need that I can provide that also.

Brush won't turn

HI THERE,
FIRSTLY REMOVE SOLEPLATE AND ENSURE THE BELT ACTUALLY TURNS WITH THE BRUSH BAR WHEN YOU TURN IT BY HAND AND ENSURE BRUSHBAR IS SAT IN HOUSING CORRECTLY, IF BELT DOESNT TURN OR IF SNAPPED THEN CLUTCH WILL NEED REPLACING ( I SELL FOR £5 )BUT IF BELT IS FINE THEN PUT SOLEPLATE BACK ON AND ENSURE CLUTCH IS TURNED TO AUTO BEFORE TURNING ON.

Dyson DC07 Vaccum - brush will not turn

Hi.

Your Dyson has A clutch unit this engages the brush roller when you pull the handle back to vacuum.

Check the clutch control knob which is at the bottom left side of machine looking from the front.
It should rotate to drive position when handle is pulled back.

If it doesnt turn the knob by hand to drive & try the machine.

If you still have no brush rotation after doing all this then UNPLUG machine from mains supply.
Now lay machine on its side & remove the sole plate, This is the cover over the brush roller.
Turn the 3 plastic screws to unlock postition & lift sole plate off.

Now try to yurn brush roller using your hand. It should turn freely if it is difficult to turn look for any foriegn object obstructing the roller.

If no obstruction found then remove the brush roller from the machine & check the bearings in the ends of the brush roller one or both may be siezed up if they are then new brush roller will solve the problem.

If bearings are good then either the clutch is faulty or the second belt which goes clutch to motor has snapped & will need replacing.

It is difficult to fully explain the clutch removing procedure,
But there are service manuals available for these repairs at this site

Brush roller won't turn

On my Dyson, there is a brush reset button on the top right hand side (if you are looking at the front) that you can press to reset the brush. I was vacuuming and too lazy to move a toy and this worked for me once I freed the rope from the brush.

Dyson DC07 Original won't pick up at base

Hi,

Lie machine on its side pull back handle as if vacuuming & switch on (KEEP YOUR FINGERS & ANY LOOSE CLOTHING CLEAR OF BRUSH ROLLER)

Brush should spin if it doesnt ensure clutch control knob on side of machine is in drive position if it isnt rotate knob by hand to drive brush should now spin.

If it doesnt & your machine has A clutch either clutch will need replacing or belts will need replacing.

Manuals are available to replace belts & remove the clutch from this site http://dysonmanuals.llc.nu/index.htm
