Question about John Deere Garden

1 Answer

My 450 lawn tractor will not start. I've used 2 cans of starting fluid (ether) to no avail. I've recharged the battery. Don't know what to try next. I live in FL and it is quite hot here. I didn't have an opportunity to start it for 2 weeks and now . . . . nothing. Everytime I ship it out to the J.D. dealership, it costs a fortune. Please help.

The usual things that stop the motor from running are either spark or fuel problems. Have you checked to see if there is any spark at the plugs ? To check disconnect the plug lead and rest it on a metal part of the engine and turn the engine over with the starter. If the ignition system is OK, you should see a decent spark from the lead. If no spark you will have to take it to a repair shop. If there is spark then it is likely to be a fuel problem of either too much (flooded) or too little which could mean dirt in the fuel that has got into the carburettor and clogged the small passages inside the carburettor.

I have a craftman riding mower model 917-273381, It will run & cutt grass good for about 4 to 5 min & then stop. I`ve replaced carb kit & check the kill switch. It still doing the same thing.

How long does it have to sit before it starts again? Does it need to be jumped? If battery is old or not recharging you can loose power. I had a regulator go bad and mine would keep dying. I would charge the battery and mow for awhile then would die again. Have you checked battery and regulator?

Bought brand new battery put choke on and turned throttle up and will turn over for like 2 minutes and never startup. then battery wears out and wont even start up its 5 years old and just had selinoid...

Try spraying some starter fluid in the carb and then starting it, if that causes it to start then you are not getting fuel to the carb. If that's the case contact me as an expert in small engines and I can tell you what to do.

Won't start

I would disconnected the spark plug wire, remove the plug and (if possible) engage the blade drive and see if the engine will turn freely. If it doesn't, then you know why the starter is frying.
If there was any fuel left in the system for those years, it may have turned to varnish and the engine then would require having its carburetor cleaned, the tank drained and flushed with fresh gas and the lines between them rinsed out too.
Also, check the spark plug for cracks (often it will show as dark jagged line in the insulator, had a couple of those) and after doing what you think is enough, pull the plug wire from the plug and preferably in a dark place, see if you can get a spark from the cable to some ground point.
If nothing has been found so far, remove the starter, attach its case to chassis ground and hit the ignition switch briefly to see if it is perhaps frozen.
Starting fluid (ether) is always on hand for stubborn small engines and can save a lot of time; if the engine won't fire with that, there are more serious problems.

Hard starting

Try Starting fluid! There is no shame with it. Some people think starting fluid is needed once something is wrong. (Jeopardy Buzzer!) Quite the contrary, for most 2 cycle engine carbs, its a way of life from day one!A shot of ether saves a lot of pulls when cold. I go thru a can every 2 years and for the problems it solves...lets just say I am NEVER without it. If I'm empty? I go and get it. Its that good to have.

Stihl fs200 weed trimmer starts hard. coil problem?

Dirty fuel filter, dirty carb, dirty air filter.

Spend 1.50 at walmart for QuickStart fuel starter fluid.
It is ether - and will start any working engine quickly.

Suggest adding about 1/2 oz of fuel system cleaner (also available at walmart automotive section) to clean up the fuel system.....

Choke works, I assume.

Craftsamen 18.5 hp battery keeps draining

Either the battery is not being recharged when the engine is running or there is a current drain when stopped. If you are not knowledgeable about electrical tests you can check for current drain by disconnecting the battery negative cable when not running. If the battery stays charged then you need to find the current drain. To check for no charge when running, turn on the headlights with the key on but engine stopped. Start the engine and see if they become somewhat brighter. If brighter, the charging system works. If not, there is a problem in the charging system which needs to be confirmed with a voltmeter.
