Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

We are selling our house and have been leaving the air conditioner on for the last several days at 70. It has been keeping the house cool for visitors when we are at work. Yesterday I came home from work and the house was warm. I checked the air conditioner and it felt like it was blowing just air. Checked it throughout the night and still blowing just air, not cold anymore. I am thinking it ran out of coolant. I am not an expert or know anything about air conditioners. If you could give me your thoughts on this I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

It can be many things like a loose connection. It can be low of refrigerant or it can be the condenser fan has stopped working. Considering you are selling the house just call a qualified HVAC repairman and have it repaired.

Normal settings 70 heating 74 to 76 cooling, I try to leave my cooling a 76 and keep it there. 76 degrees feels good if its 95 or hotter out side and the lower you set it the more it will cost.

When my unit was installed, the house was 1200 SF, now it is 1800 SF. Will this unit still cool my house in the summer?

The answer depends on several factor but as a general rule I size systems at one ton cooling per 500-600 square feet. Therefore I think you will find on very hot days that your a/c is going to be working hard to keep up. Thank you

Our carrier air conditioner failed to cool down the house last night. changed the filter and still struggling to cool house down.

is it cooling some at night but none during the day basically ? Outside unit clean also ? Good airflow ? if yes on all of these feel the copper pipes that go inside the house from the outside and once a/c has been on for a few minutes the large line should be very cool or cold to where it would condensate.. Sometimes it may take up to 15 minutes..

Hi, the design temp for air conditioners is 90F. When the outdoor temp is over this you may notice it not keeping up. However, there are some things you can check. First, check the air filter. Next check the indoor and outdoor coils to see if they are clean. These coils need to be clean to work efficiently, especially when it's very hot. You can get some cleaner for the indoor coil that does not have to be rinsed off. The outdoor coil will have to be rinsed though. Of course there's always the possibility that the refrigerant charge is low. Let me know what you find.

Did you hear the indoor unit running (the fan blowing)? If so, there's a good chance that either the filter is plugged or more likely, the evaporator coil is iced up and preventing any air from flowing into the dwelling.

This points to a refrigeration issue with the unit - possibly a leak or low refrigerant charge.

You should turn the A/C off and leave it off for a day. Then just turn the indoor unit fan on by selecting the fan "on" setting on your thermostat. If you feel air coming out of the vents, then the evaporator coil was probably frozen.

If you are not an HVAC tech, it's time to call for professional help.

Air conditioning unit not cooling

the problem sounds like a defective capacitor its located on the condensing unit outside, also a contactor that is used can be defective also.

Yes, first turn your thermostat to the off position. Try to reset both fuse boxes again. If the ac comes back on problem solved, if not fuses and or breakers may need to be replaced. Let me know if this helps and we can go futher into why the ac is not only reaching the temp at night. Thanks
