It won't power up? Or is it just that it will not finish "booting" up? If your display screen lights up and you get the initial screen but that is all then this indicates as you suggested a hard disk failure. You will need to call your Toshiba service center as the hard disk on these machine also contains the operating system for the machine so it will have to be loaded onto the new drive. This is why on Toshiba's that when the hard disk fails the machine just "hangs up" on the warm up sequence.

NEW MacBookPro crashes! I just bought a new macbookPro and it has crashed on three different programs; won't download the manual from online (get the beach ball) and makes a sound when power-ing u

The two "whirring" noises that you hear on power up is normal. The beauty of having a new macbook is you can reinstall the software very easily and a fresh install should fix your problem. Put the disk that came with the machine into the disk drive and turn the computer off. Turn it back on and press and HOLD the "alt" button until you are given the option of booting from your hard drive or your disk. Choose the disk and when it boots up, FIRST go to disk utility and verify the hard drive. If it comes back with no problems, proceed with the fresh install of the system by following the prompts on the disk.

My computer drive crashed. How can I retrieve the data?

If the operating system program was all that crashed, then yes, you may be able to recover data. If the hard drive itself failed totally, then your only possible option is to take it to a data recovery specialist. They can often recover data off these devices as they have special tools and software to do it. They are expensive, though, so unless the data you are looking to recover is very important to you, it;s probably not worth the cost. Now if the hard rive itself still runs, but just won't run Windows, you can remove the hard drive and connect to to another PC as an add-on drive and access the files that way.

What happened is that your hard drive has died. The hard drive is the only moving piece of machinery inside a computer besides obviously the fans that can make that type of noise. The best course of action would be to buy a new hard drive, install it, then install Win7 again. Here is a good replacement drive.

This normally means that the Hard Drive is not recognized, and most likely can be attributed through a crashed hard drive. If it's not POSTing, then I think you need to look for loose cords/cables as well. That can cause the hard drive to not be recognized.

Drive won't spin up

WD drives are very vulnerable to overheating, power surges and streaks. Quite often bad power supply unit combined with power streak is usually enough to fry the spindle driver chip on the electronics and make the data inaccessible...you can try to swap PCB from another WD drive of the same model but your chances of success are close to zero. Sorry for the bad news, but your drive is most likely toast. I hope this helps.

I have a sony vaio pcg. it powers on and does nothing else. the 2 little cooling fans come on but the hard drive doesn't run and screen won't come on. can anyone help me out. thanks

Hello,

Its possible that you already have a bad hard drive. It may have crashed. Your system will not boot without the hard drive running. The computer will keep on trying to look for the Hard drive that's probably why it looks like its doing nothing. Bring your machine to sony and have them fix it. If you know how to open up your Vaio, try to check the Hard drive connection and see it its loose, if its not loose. its time to replace the hard drive.

I hope this helps. Thanks and have a nice day.
