Had the exact same problem with exact same computer. Do the following:

1. check for virus, spyware, malware, etc.
2. uninstall driver and reinstall.

If you continue to have problems, check for sound using headphones or external speakers. If this works, order a set of speakers online and replace them. If this does not work then it's your sound card and for that you might need a pc repair tech. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

My head phone jack plug is broke off so can't test with it but if i am within the bios and click on a wrong key it makes a beeping sound. Perhaps speakers a good?

No, that's just the computer's internal speaker. Try the first two items I mentioned. If that doesn't work, try to borrow a set of headphones or speakers from a friend. If it's the jack on the computer itself, then you'll have to get that replaced before you can do any further testing. Let me know.

Sounds like you might not have a conexant device in your computer or it is broken and unrecognizable. Most times the conexant was a modem. Exactly what device are you trying to set up?

Updated the drivers for your sound card? it could be incompatible (not the correct driver) if prior to updating the sound still works.

Need drivers to run windows 98se on dell xps m140

Microsoft (and Dell) stopped supporting Windows 98 a few years ago -- it lasted for over TEN years! So, it is *NOT* likely that you will find drivers for any computer that was "designed for Windows 2000" or "designed for Windows XP" or "designed for Vista".

So, in general, it is a _bad_ idea to connect any computer running Windows 98 to the Internet -- Microsoft has issued many "security-fixes" in the 4 years after they stopped supporting Windows 98 and Windows ME.
