A short on power cord will cause a blow, and the unit would not start, it looks more like a grounding problem or a faulty component in the reader control board.
Check grounding of power cord, and test card reader on a different socket.

Chech also the data connection cable, a contact in that cable may also cause the problem.

If that does not help, then the card reader board should be tested at component level. This units are considered not serviceable and usually they get replaced when this happens.

Claire,

Have you tried connecting the drive to another computer using Windows 7 or later. You could try chkdisk /f at a command prompt or get the testdisk app to identify deeper issues with the drive.

Replaced bulb yesterday worked fine. Today light will not turn on. projector turns on both lights green for 10 seconds, then power goes red and status blinks green for about 5 seconds, then status light...

green green is power on, normal
then it tries to light the lamp, but it can't so the protection circuit comes activated.
you get red and green blinking

Then it goes to standby, red and off.

so something has happened to the lamp, or lamp ballast power supply.
Take the lamp out and check if all is OK with the 2 terminals in the connector, and the leads to the lamp are intact.

Failing that, I would suspect the ballast lamp power unit

Blingking light on my motherboard, no power.

Chances are your power supply and computer is fine! From other forums on this problem (which I also had), I've learned the following:
1. If you unplug the computer for a half hour or so (the blinking green light will gradually slow down and quit) and plug it back in, the situation will correct itself and the green light will be steady; however if this does not work,
2. a reset that works for a lot of people with the blinking light problem involves leaving the power supply plugged in and unplugging the power supply connection at the motherboard (it usually also has a blinking green LED) and plugging it back in. To read up on how to do this, Google "blinking green light on computer power supply" and read through some of the forums and you'll come on more specific instructions. Usually, you have to wade through everybody telling you to replace the power supply or your motherboard is fried. It's worth a try for a quick fix, just in case those situations don't apply!
