Early 1984 Shovelhead FLH, Bendix hanging up after starting, starter continuing to spin & getting hot. How can I make sure alignment/adjustment is correct to prevent this? What is next nest step?

Alignment isn't your problem. Most likely the solenoid. Not pulling the bendix back, replace the starter or bendix. if alignment could be the problem, I have seen it , The starter needs shimmed out. in very rare occasions, I have done a per bolt shim. Only because some one has put a grinder to the mating surfaces.

Starter staying engaged after starting on 2005 malibu ls

check to engagement wire at the starter, make sure that power is only present when key is in the start position.if this is the case, then your sarter bendix is hanging up on the flywheel, this is caused by either inproper shiming where the starter is bolted to the block, or having the wrong bendix on the starter, there or several different bendix s general motors uses, also if the return spring in the solonoid is broken or not strong enough the starter could hang up. if the problem is power continuing to feed the solonoid with the key in the run position you could have a bad or out of adjustment ignition switch, since the power feeds the solonoid directly from the ignition switch, other than the neutral switch on the colomn

88F250 4x4 5.8L FI 5 speed. A friend has this & the starter went out. I replaced it & the solenoid. No big deal right? I returned it & the next day he called me & told me that the...

Its a solenoid...it engages the bendix and truck starts...bendix should retract because power to it gets shut off by ignition switch going to "run".

Only way bendix would stay engaged or get a signal to keep turning ???
Bad contacts in ignition switch...maybe ??
Start relay in under hood power distribution panel has hot or welded contacts ?

I've gotta think about this one...hope this gives some help...

When we start the car it will start but sometimes the starter hangs up. Then when you try to restart it acts like it does not want to start but it will. Trying to figure out if it needs a new starter.

may need a Bendix, you will need to pull the starter off, Safety First Disconnect the Battery, and look at the Bendix and make sure all the teeth are there and it is not worn. unless there is a flat spot on the flywheel. Tim

What is a Bendix:
it is the part of the starter that has a coil so that when you turn the key to start your car, voltage goes to the coil, and it expels the rotor which spins and engages the starter Bendix (with the smaller teeth on it) into the larger flywheel teeth to turn the engine to start the car.

Having problems with my 2005 polaris sportsman 4x4 400cc ATV. Electric start wont work. Thought it may have been the magnetic switch for the starter but nothing seems to have changed. When i turn the key...

try jumping the two posts on the solenoid near the battery with key on , then try to start , if it starts or turns over it needs a solenoid, or the bendix is hanging up on the flywheel, had the same problem and took off my recoil cover and found teeth on bendix all chewed up and stuck on flywheel. try to pull the recoil start first and see if that releases bendix, if not remove recoil cover for inspection,or your starter is bad, if it sounded like an old dodge starting up prior to it not starting , its probably the bendix

Motor hangs will not turnover until hand turn flywheel

This CAN happen if your battery is weak or starter is damaged and the "Bendix" is not working properly.

Read up how the Bendix is supposed to work to understand the principle. Search Bendix starter on google.

We can only guess what brand and model you have.

Is it easy to replace a bendix gear in my 1997 chevy 1500 starter

Frankly, it's much easier to use the bad starter to cover the core charge on a rebuilt starter. Replacing the bad starter shouldn't take more than a half hour even if it is hard to reach. A rebuilt unit will cost 1/2 2/3 of new and will have wear parts (such as the Bendix) replaced. Some of the auto parts chain stores offer a 'lifetime' warranty on rebuilts.

if all connections at starter and battery are good and battery is fully charged then you may have a bad starter.( new does not mean good) hope this helps good luck.
