Question about Sony RDR-GX3 DVD Recorder

1 Answer

DVD Recorderwith/without Tuner

I want to buy my parents a DVD Recorder. I don't know if I have to get one with a Tuner or not. They have the basic cable (Comcast) hookup-no cable box, just a coax cable coming in. I also don't know if that will have to change next year when all channels go all digital. I'm confused!

I would get one with the tuner so they can watch something else while they record. Also unless they have a brand new tv, it will not work the way the have it set up as of February. They can either get a cable box or, there is a digital converter they can buy for around fifty bucks. but you can get a 40 dollar coupon from the government. You can go here to order the coupon http://www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/ Hope this helps.

WILL RCA DVD/RECORDER, RECORD MOVIES FROM TV TO DVD DISC

It depends on the model and the source. The DRC212N is not a recorder, so it won't.

Depending on the model, it may or may not have a tuner. (Most modern ones are sold without any tuner. Older models may only have an analog (NTSC) tuner.) I know of one Magnovox DVR/DVD recorder that has an ATSC (digital) tuner.

If you are going to record OTA signals, you will probably need a digital to analog converter. If you are recording from a cable or satellite system set-top box, you need to set the channel on the box and then record on Line In. (Analog cable should record directly.)

Please add a comment with more information about your DVD recorder. I'll be glad to provide more assistance. I hope this helps.

I am having trouble in connecting the new dvd recorder . I think ,I am missing some thing on the initial set up to receive the channels our present configuration is ... 1.R F cable input to set top box,...

I found your model information on a site which provided something I was going to ask you if I could not find it.DVD recorders need either a digital input from a cable box or a self-contained digital scanner(yours does not have this). So,you need to hook up as follows,External cable into cable box input, cable box output into DVD recorder input,DVD recorder output to TV coaxial cable input(usually labeled ant.)the screw on connector anyhow, you should know what I mean it seems. In this configuration, you should not need to turn on the DVD recorder to watch TV without recording because they usually have a bypass mode when there is no power on the DVD.If you have picture in picture(PIP),you should be able to use the main source to record and switch over to the PIP channel if you do not want to watch what you are recording.Do about a 10-30 second test of that just to make sure though so you don't end up all messed up.Oops.My bad...you do not have PIP.As long as the cable box is tuned to the channel you want to record, you should be able to use the TV's tuner to watch something else with no problem. When doing this on VHS recorders, sometimes the screen would get fuzzy and you would have to press the TV/VCR vutton on the VCR remote.I do not know if a DVD recorder will do it or not as I have yet to buy one,but when you do your test recording, you can mess around with whatever you want to see what happens so you will be fully prepared when you do it.If you need more help or have a problem/question,just comment here and I will get an autolink to your post and will reply ASAP.Good luck! DVD recorder with NTSC tuner

Hey Whormd,

If neither your DVD recorder nor your TV has a digital (ATSC) tuner, they will not be able to directly receive over-the-air broadcasts after the DTV conversion is completed without the assistance of a set-top converter box. Please keep in mind that the official analog broadcasting cut-off date does vary by country. In the U.S. this date is February 17th, 2009, and that Canadian TV stations have until August 31st 2011 to make the transition.

Please also note that you will need one converter box for each device with an analog tuner, in order to watch one program while recording another. One converter box would need to be connected to the DVR, while the second converter box would need to be connected to the TV itself.

For more information, I would strongly suggest checking out the FAQ sections of the official DTV websites established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Canadian Radio/Television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC):

http://www.dtv.gov/index.html (FCC)
http://www.crtc.gc.ca/ (CRTC)

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
