My Marantz AV Surround Receiver SR4200 has an over zealous protect mechanism which turns off the receiver when it's clearly not necessary. Is there any way to adjust or turn off this mechanism?

There are 2 causes of the problem that you describe. One is the input signal is too high and is over driving the amp. The other is the output impedance is dropping due to short circuit etc. There is no adjustment on the protection circuit. It is possible that a weak sensor is present or a bad transistor etc, but you need special equipment to check that.

Is it worth trying to fix a maranz sr4200 with slight water damage

Probably not. Marantz does not supply replacement boards, so you can't just put a new board into it to replace what was damaged.

Quite often if I try to switch from say the DVD input to the CD or tuner input, nothing happens. I have to start turning the surround knob to make the amp switch. All my external components are connected...

I can't really find an explicit reference to it in the manual but I'm thinking it's checking the potential digital assigments first as most AVR's default to a preference for digital in, then switch to analog if the digital signal is not present or drops; and return to digital if the signal reappears.

Page 11 talks about the default and manual assignments of digital inputs. They don

My Maratnz SR4200 is coming up with a protect sign on the digital display. I have tried cutting off the ends of the wire to ensure dust hasn't tripped it and also am sure the wire has been entered...

Unplug all of the speaker wires. Switch it on. If it still says "protect" then the problem is internal within the receiver. If it stops going into protect mode with speakers disconnected, then the problem is possibly blown (shorted) and or incorrect speakers causing it to trip.

Hi, My Marantz SR4200 goes into protect mode about 45min after cranking the volume up to party mode, ie above '0'. It is getting worse slowly. Ok at lower volumes. Something seems to be overheating,...

Or it could be you're overdriving it, hence the heat. Take a clue and turn it down. At 70 wpc played loudly it could be going into speaker- and self-damaging distortion.

Make sure it has a lot of ventilation.

Connecting apple tv to Marantz sr4200. The HDMI plays video, but no audio??? I connected an optical cable, but still no sound???

Check out the sound menu on the TV you might not have it switched to digital out, or have the wrong audio mode.

Have to turn way up in order to hear

Have you gone into the TV's menu to make sure that the audio outoput is not set to "variable"?

On my Sony I have the option to set the audio output as "fixed or "variable"

make sure its set to fixed

if that's not it try a different input on your receiver. you can use anything EXCEPT PHONO.

Lastly on my Denon receiver I have to specify how each input should get its signal if you are using an optical cable then you may have to go into the menu and tell it to look for a digital signal not an analog one.

Hope that helps

Protect error on marantz sr4200

Check all your speaker wires carefully. Chances are good that a braid has crossed from + to - and causes the unit to protect itself. This is a very common problem! everyone's done it at some point. Check connections at both the receiver side and the speaker side. If you still have a problem, post a comment and I can help you troubleshoot further. Hope this helps.
