I just picked up a nice Dell Pentium 4 and I suspect someone changed the jumper settings. My problem is that there is no jumper setting information on the hdd. It's a Maxtor model 91301u3. Can anyone give me a diagram. Some drives give settings and no diagram to show which side of the jumper pins to to go on. I have several drives that are down and the same problem without the installation manuals.

If the problem occured upon installation of a new hard drive then it may just be a jumper problem. Remember that there are two types of cables. With old type cables, jumpers must be MASTER and SLAVE (MA and SL). With newer cables, jumpers will be CS (Cable Select) for both drives. If in doubt, try both type. If Cable Select works, then position the connectors and determines which drive is C: and which is D.

To the first users question, try and hook up the drive internally, as a slave in your computer. Bypass your external case connection altogether.

To the second Guest: Please repeat what you said, but in the form of a question please.

Maxtor 3100 200gb hard drive not detected on PC running xp

Here we have two things to check and understand.

1) Is the Bios Detecting this hardware. Or is it that the basic Motherboard itself is not accepting the HDD.

2) The version of OS you are running and if the pug and play is able to detect the Hardware as the second stage of detection.

Do you see any hardware detection notification when you connect the HDD or when you Start running the HDD ?

I would like you to check these which will give you a clear picture of the issue.

Else please write back.. The Hardware on which the HDD is connected. Motherboard Specs, and also the messages or notifcations that you might be getting while trying to connect the Hard Disk. Good Luck.

MAXTOR 250 gb usb hard disk is not detected

On some computers the output power of the USB ports is too low to drive the Ext. HDD.

Have you tried other USB ports on your computer?

Get yourself a powered USB hub and try that, borrow one if possible, if that works get one for yourself....

Maxtor One Touch 4 is beeping when I connect it by usb

Does the HDD spinup?
My slightly educated guess... the Ext 2.5in HDD requires more power than it is getting from the single port.

1. Try another port
2. Try it on another computer (all USB ports do not provide 250ma to a load)You may be sharing this avail voltage with all plugged in devices and will have to pull 1-2 others to get the HDD online. Since STARTUP current is high, the HDD pulls all it can from the ports (logical) then settles down and uses 1/3 to keep spinning. After the HDD is up and online, try plugging the other USB devices back in, 1 at a time. If it stalls the HDD - you know the why
3. Take it back and find something a bit less power-hungry (Like Hitichi or Toshiba)

Simple you need to update your bios by downloading bios updates for you motherboard. Then it should recognise your HDD. The yellow triange just means your mboard does not have the necessary drivers to recognise the device. thanks

The first issue is how you are connected. If it is IDE or SATA. Next is to ensure that the bios settings are set to enable the corresponding connection. Next ensure you have the cords or ribbons seated properly in the drive as well as the board, ensuring the power connection is secure. Good Luck!
