Question about Poulan Pro Chain Saw 46cc 20"

1 Answer

My brother gave me his pp4620avx with the easy thumb chain adjuster. I found out why he didn't want it; the chain loosens in about two minutes-consistently. The guard doesn't even seem to fit properly and there seems to be some play in the bar even when the adjuster is tight. My question: can this saw be converted to a two nut conventional adjuster?

How to tighten chain on 4620avx poulan pro

First, RTFM- read the manual. Lost it? No problem, download it from Poulan PRO website page for PP4620avx. Pick a version you like, save and read it. Google is your friend.
Chain Adjustment Part cut and pasted as follows:
Adjusting the tension:
Chain tension is very important. Chain stretches during use. This is especially true during the first few times you use your saw. Always check chain tension each time you use and refuel your saw.
1. Lift lever on bar knob and turn counter-clockwise 1.5-2 turns to loosen clutch cover.
2. Turn adjusting wheel (downward direction) to tension chain until chain solidly contacts bottom of guide bar rail. Lift tip of guide bar while adjusting tension. Tighten chain Adjusting Wheel
3. Use a screwdriver to move chain around guide bar to ensure all links are in bar groove.
4. While lifting tip of guide bar, tighten bar knob securely (clockwise).
Hand tighten only.

Be careful not to destroy the adjustment mechanism. When it breaks, go for a clutch cover with the simple adjuster that needs a "scrench". Longer term, learn how to search this info. Saves time. Now you can work on sharpening chains- very important.

I have a Poulan Pro PP4620 AVX 46cc Gas Chainsaw w/20

If this is the tooless adjustment, it sounds like the small gears in the cover have stripped, remove the side cover, turn it over and remove the cover over the tentioning mechanism, replace parts as required.

The chain on the 16 in chain saw keep slipping. Seems the thumb screw will not stay tight? Who can check this and fix?

First thing I would do would be to loosen the thumb screw fully so the chain is as loose as you can get it Next, loosen the chain bar and pull it out as far as possible which will take up the slack in the chain itself. Re tighten the chain bar. Afterward, you can perform detailed adjustment on the chain by playing with the thumb screw.

This solution has always worked for me and my various chainsaws.

You don't get it people, no MATTER WHAT I DO, the chain keeps coming off the cheap electric chain saw. Both Homelite and Remington share the same problem. These DO NOT WORK! I haven't gotten more than 2...

Quit doing what you are doing before you cut yourself. The cut could kill or cost $10,000 just to live with an ugly scar. You chain is not staying adjusted correctly.
My Homelite does NOT do this. But my neighbors Poulan did. It thrashed the chain against the spike and threw it completely off. The adjustor didn't work right and an attempt to bolt it tight also failed. So I ordered the spike and the whole cover/brake handle/chain adjustor kit for it. Should get here from Sears in a week for under $40 USD.

How to tighten the chain

First you must loosen the axle bolt. Then you will have 2 adjusters. One on either side that attach to the axle bolt. Tighten the adjusters to where the marks on both sides line up with the same mark. You should tighten the chain to where you can get 2 fingers under the chain up by the engine. Then tighten the axle back up.
PLEASE RATE! Click the 4 thumbs up if this helps you! Thanks!

How do you change the blade with the tooless blade changing system?

If this is the Stil you flip out the chain adjusting tention handle and loosen it and then with the thumb wheel loosen the chain all the way. Turn the tention handle all the way out and then the cover will come off so you can put a new chain on it.

With this; “Handle, Chassis & Bar Assembly” print; item 67; ChainBrake Assembly; $21.83.
You also need;
  • Item 68; Bar Mounting Nut; $0.56 each (need 2) and
  • “Engine Assembly” print; not illustrated; part number 545006011; Scrench; $9.75.
This is the configuration professionals have used forever. The only thing to remember here is to hold the nose of the bar up when adjusting and tightening the bar nuts.

The dash number of your serial number is the type.
I think this is the what you seek:
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/PP4620AVX-Gas-Saw/75.PP4620AVX-Gas-Saw.1.59.1.html
The "Handle, Chassis, and Bar Assembly" detail
Items 63 through 69 are parts, I think item 70 is a complete assembly ($22.78 without a kiss).

Your saw without tooless adjustment.

The "Handle, Chassis, and Bar Assembly" detail
Item 64 (complete assembly) $2.53.

If my saw I'd ask if it can be modified!!!

I suspect a vert simple modification. HTH
