Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

Warranties on products purchased from the bestbuy store

I would like to know if my daughter's laptop that she purchased during the holidays of 2007 is covered. She was approved and got the Acer laptop with your credit card from bestbuy. And one day while she was typing on the laptop, some of the letters started sticking. She called a phone number but had to end the call because she found out she was being charged by the minute while she was talking. Can she find out more information about her laptop warranty and why she was being charged for the call she made or if there's a toll free number she can call for future problems. She seems to think she has no coverage for the laptop but I know all products covers at least a year's of manufacture's coverage. Please tell us what we need to do for future problems.

Acer comes with a one year warranty pertaining to manufacture defects only, and theres an acer registration thin that pops up when you first turn on the laptop, and you will need to present a serial code of the laptop to get assistance (should be on a sticker of the bottom of the laptop) you could try talking to the people at bestbuy and see what they can tell you, but i don't know what that will do in terms of getting assistance... but as long as you can get it to acer and prove that its a manufactures defect your covered, but if its deemed anything else, im afraid not.

if your saying the letters are sticking, do you mean the keys on the laptop itself? if it is that could just be fixed by getting it cleaned, as if anything gets inside of the laptop keyboard it can stick.

oh, and as for the call, no clue, if its supposed to be toll free, and its not, then their not doing something right, and in no means should be placing a charge.

Screen is inverted


If you bought it from a store take it back and get another!!
If like from a official web site like (Dell) then call or online customer service, they will help you!

If you purchased it other than that then please find the best computer store nearest you and take it to them so they may turn it to its proper direction, I would pay a few bucks for that myself... ;)

No, there is no fuse.

Is the manufacturer's warranty still valid?
Did you purchase the computer via a credit-card that "doubles" the warranty?
Did you purchase an "extended" warranty from the manufacturer, when you "registered" it?
Did you purchase an "extended" warranty from the retail store?

Otherwise, find the nearest authorized HP repair outlet, and get it fixed.

If it is still on warranty, call the manufacturer. If not, look on eBay. Once you purchase a replacement go to a store like bestbuy, and have them install it for you as it is a hard job. Hope I helped.

If you purchased a warranty with Best Buy they should honor it. Before sending this to the US, call Best Buy and get a confirmation, tracking, case, or verification number.

Dell should honor their warranty if it's still valid regardless of where you purchased it.

Broken screen


Normaly, with warranties if the unit went defective on its own, there should be free service during the warranty period. If the user abuses or breaks the device by any means, then the warranty may be void.

You should ask the dealer or ever who sold you the warranty about the terms and conditions.

In the instrction manual, or the warranty policy sheets, there normaly should be a copy of their policy.

Key board missing keys and some buttons dont work, screen cracked


I don't know. I don't deal with Bestbuy much, they're a bit pricey for me. I would suggest pulling out your warrant info and getting in touch with Bestbuy. I do know that many times the local Bestbuy here will pass the buck on the warranty and want you to send it to the manufacturer. I seem to get alot of work due to this. Of course, Bestbuys will probably differ from area to area.

Memory Upgrade


Increasing the amount of RAM will always help your laptop's performance. However, in this case, I would try going to HP's web site and updating the video drivers or try a different program to play DVD's. 958 should be more than enough RAM to run DVD's smoothly. You can find DVD software at filehippo.com for free.
As for RAM instalation:
I would only let Bestbuy install them if it's free. Installing memory chips is simple, they're located under a panel on the bottom of the machine. (Be sure to power down first) Do it yourself and use the money you save on the outrageous gas prices.

2 keys fell off my laptop


It depends on the manufacturer. I see this on laptops rather frequently and it really depends on the keyboard as to how difficult it is to get back on. Sometimes even with all the pieces, I cant get the key back on and have to replace the keyboard. Doesn't hurt to try especially if it is still under warranty.
