Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I am on an iMac purchased in April 2010, I use another computer with Windows XP to take pictures using the Lightbox from Ortery and use an external drive to save pics to. When I use the iMac for editing, I take the external from the Windows machine and hook it back to the Mac, when I go to save it after editing I get the message could not write to file you do not have permission to write to this file. I have done this before with the same external and no problem. The computers are not networked.

Ok the File permissions are being altered when you go from one machine to the other. What you need to do,is "Take Ownership" of that file, and change it's "Attribute" from READ ONLY to FULL permissions.
You need to do this in a terminal on Apple.
docs.info.apple.com › Support -
support.apple.com/kb/ht2963 - United States
Check out these links above they will show you how to take ownership of the files, for the Apple.
Below is how to for a Windows file, should you need to.

Buy an external SD-Card reader, solves all your problems.

The issue is that Canon does not update their software to support old cameras on new operating systems. You can make it work with the usb cable, but it may be difficult, so if you havent figured it out already, i suggest you stick with buying an external SD-Card reader like the rest of us using digital cameras.
(Pro tip: ALL(almost) Pro photographers use SD-Card readers, and they are cheap!).

Tip

What Does It Mean When Support for My Operating System Ends?

Microsoft Support for Windows Vista (with no service packs installed) ended on April 13, 2010, while support for Windows XP (without Service Pack 3 installed) ended on July 13, 2010. Windows 2000 support ended on July 13, 2010 as well.
There is no Service Pack 3 for the 64-bit version of Windows XP. If you're running the 64-bit version of Windows XP with SP2, you have the latest service pack and will continue to be eligible for support and receive updates until April 8, 2014.
If you are still running a version of Windows where support has ended, it means that version of Windows will no longer receive any updates from the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site. These updates are generally provided for security reasons to help protect the PC from harmful viruses, spyware, malware, and other malicious software. Windows Update also provides new drivers for your hardware that can improve the reliability of Windows.
Hackers love to take a security vulnerability in Windows and exploit it to their advantage. So, if a vulnerability is found in Windows XP or Windows Vista and you are not running the latest service pack, you will not be protected and will be at risk.

How Can I Tell What Service Pack is Installed?
Follow these steps to discover what Service Pack is installed:
1) Click on the Start Button
2) Right-click on either My Computer or Computer (depending on your Windows version)
3) Click on Properties
On this window, it should tell you which version of Windows along with which service pack is installed). It should also tell you whether you are running a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows.

I just purchased a StoreJet 2M 320 GB drive. I would like to format it for use with my iMac. The MAC software doesn't seem to have a solution. How do I format the drive?

When the flash memoryUSB hard drive device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restoreit by reformatting it using a computer with Windows OS. Insert the flash or USB hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - AdministrativeTools - Computer Management - Disk Management. Then right click on Disk 1removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted itwill indicate that it is Healthy. You need to format the flash or external drive. Format thedrive as primary drive and in FAT32. (FAT32 will allow data to be exchangedbetween MACs and PCs also between XP/Vista and earlier versions of Windows).

congratulations on switching to mac!plug the external hard drive back into the PC, and copy the photo's to the PC, now plug it into your mac and go to applications-utilities-disc utility, the external drive should be listed on the left, click on the erase tab, at the volume format select "ms-dos file system", then click the erase button, this will erase everything on the drive and set it up so your mac can use it (but its ok because you moved all your pictures to the PC) now you can go back to the PC and copy the pictures on the external drive and it will work with your mac.
