Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I recently purchased a notebook from Gateway, LT series, LT 2016u. I have a high speed modemn at home. While it shows I am connected to the internet, I can not get online. I have "Internet Explorer" and have visited default and settings which reads "custom". Everytime I attempt to reset the "custom" to "Microsoft Windows" and "Internet Explorer" it first appears to do the task then drops from the screen. I really want to web cam to my son on the other side of the country and I am anxious to get online .

DrifterK, Your answer was far too complicated for my tech-less mind. I'll answer your questions, but I think I might be better with another Expert. I purchased the netbook on sale July, 2010, the manufacturer date is September 2009. The netbook has Windows XP. When I first went online I was using my ethernet wire. I had myself on the web cam and working (I think) with the Wizard to install my webcam capabilities. I don't know whether I pushed the wrong key, but before I could complete the application , it dropped from my screen. I have never been able to get online with my netbook since. I did manage to connect to my high speed modem, wire-less-ly using my SSID #. That was a tech break through for me. Although the connection reads Maximum Strength, I am still unable to get netbook online. I found a note I made, July 30th: Set Programs- 1 Internet Explorer for Default Location; 2-Removing Access to Internet Explorer, Safari as default application. I have no idea why I did this, unless I thought it was a way to get to a live chat carrier. I am seriously lacking in tech knowledge. I hope all that helps you to help me. Maureen, MOBA1@tds.net

Hi,

first i would like to know , how the notebook are connected to

your Modem?,

What I would like you to do first is to connect your Notebook

direct ( meaning using a wired connection ) .

Using the LAN Cable provided ( included on your Modem ).

if you can connect and browse on the Internet then I will

help you further later, after we establish that you can connect

to internet flawlessly.

If for now , you still cannot get or browse on the Internet

you may have to to do these:

    • Click on " Start ", Go to Control Panel and Select :

Then it will open another window like these:

If not connected , you may have to ' Right " click on the Green Box above and select

    " Properties ".

    • Navigate on Internet Protocol ( TCP/ IP ) , Click " properties " , and

Select " Obtain an IP address automatically " .

You may need to restart your computer and post if you can now browse on the Internet or not.

These should be done using a wired LAN connection and insure that the Modem is ON and

    connected.

I would like also to ask , do you have a Router?

  • Rommel Cana

One reason why I am asking is :

you need that " Device " to connect to the Internet wirelessly speaking.

These guides can be found starting on page 80 of the Manual :

Gateway Notebook User Guide for Windows® XP - 8511833

    http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Mob...

    Source:

    http://support.gateway.com/support/manli...

We will go to these after you can connect to the Internet using wired connection first .

then after connecting your possible router to the Modem .( please post the Router Model also if

    possible ).

    • you will need also a PDF reader to view the documents

    like

Adobe - Adobe Reader( click on the link above )

Download and install it on your computer, If you still do not have one.

You can also temporary assign ( just for troubleshooting ) IP address like

" 192. 168. 2.100 on your Wireless Card and see if it works .

First to be sure that this is not a malfunction of the internet explorer..and if you know that the connectivity used to work until recently ..install another browser and see if it connects you ..
here is the download link for Mozilla Firefox..which is a program similar with internet explorer..
http://www.mozilas.com/
Just download ...on desktop ..and try to install it ..
If it works on mozila ..than the explorer is issued and you need to reinstall it ..or go to control panel and uninstall the explorer 8 to 7 or 6 ..Practically by uninstalling the updates you roll it back to the original one ..
If it will not work with this new browser ..than means that the connectivity is issued..and you will need to see if the lan card is installed proper..
I assumed that you have windows 7 if you bought it recently ..and I will link the lan card driver to reinstall it ..cause if it has the wrong driver or non at all..it will not connect even if the modem is connected normal and functional ..
http://www.mediafire.com/file/tats9la3m2p8aw1/LAN_Atheros_AR8131_v1.0.0.10_Win7x82x64.zip
to see if the lan card is to blame ..go to device manager by right click on the my computer icon ..than properties..and hardware ..and device manager ..
In the list look for network ..and see if the cards are all installed ..if there is any issue with one of the cards ..(specially Lan card ..cause I assumed you connect the modem into the local are a connection on the computer ) it will appear in yellow with an ask sign on it ..
in this case extract from the archive the driver I sent you ..and install it ..restart the computer ..go to LAN properties(status) by double click on the 2 monitor icon in the tray system ...and there choose properties..and tcp/Ip protocol ..and choose to assign an IP address automatically ..and OK ..
if all is right ..and the modem is set correctly ..than it should work ..

By the way ...leave me a comment for anything you do not understand..and also try to explain more accurate exactly how you connect ..and if the connection used to work and what do you think it damaged it ..
Another thing ..for to use the webcam it has to be installed with the proper driver too...and you need an instant messaging program for to video-call... it depends on what kinda account you have ...yahoo MAS hotmal ;google talk ..etc..
Usually those do not depend on internet explorer to work ..and if the issue is just from explorer and the connection it is working ..than you should be able to use it ..
If you can not install Mozilla cause you can not download it ...just download the installer into another computer ..and than get it on a memory stick ...and insert into the computer and run the installation ..same with the driver if it will be the case..
Im saying these cause I found myself many times in front of numerous malfunctions on internet explorer ..and the actual connection was perfect but only Explorer was damaged..

I see now that the terms I used may confused you ..but there is nothing complicated in what I said..
cause you said you use windows XP..I have to provide you with another driver for local area connection (LAN) ..which is nothing else but the ethernet connection ..
but ,, assuming that it was connected before via Ethernet ..and working ..the driver may not be necessary ...
I suspect that you messed with the IP address provided by the ISP(the internet provider) ..and this is the issue that you can not connect with the cable anymore ..
The issue with the Safary ..is not that important cause that program is just the corespondent program from MOzilla Firefox to the Outlook express of the Internet Explorer..and will not affect your Instant messaging ....
To fix it ..just go to start ...choose Set program access and defaults and in that window choose Microsoft windows..This will put the priority back to microsoft programs ...
after that ..if you have a call service from the internet provider...call them and ask to came and make the connection again ...(insert the Ip address and the rest of the servers into the local area connection )..
It is supposed to be their responsibility to provide this kinda service for free...
If you have the numbers written down somewhere ..I can guide you to insert them again ...but Im not aware if you have them or not..or if you have a static IP address or you connect to the Ethernet with an automatic IP address..and this is the reason I told you to call them ..or ask a neighbor to help you ...cause it is not a big deal..
just in case you will need I will link the ethernet driver for your model here again ....and remember also to check the camera ..to see if it works ..To do that ..just open the AMcap..(the capture mode) from all programs from start ..and if the camera shows images it means that it works ..if not ..it needs to run the disk again ...The one that came with the camera ..or the disk with the drivers for the notebook if it is a built in on e....
here will be the driver for Ethernet ..in case will be needed..
    http://support.gateway.com/support/drive...
If needed this is the LAN driver for your model into XP operation system ..
The way to rebuild the Ethernet connection is like it follows :
first download the driver like I linked it ..(just click the red words saying download now)..save on the desktop ..and run it into your computer ..until finish and than restart ..
Open the local area connection by double click on the 2 monitor icon in the task bar ..(right) and this window should appear..
after that click properties..like in the picture..and this window should came along ..

in this moment ..if you observe the TCP/IP protocol is underlined ...Just like in this picture..scrol until you see this protocol ..and double click on it ..and this next window will appear..

this is the final window..and in here you have to insert the numbers from the provider..if you have a static IP adress..like in this picture..The only thing is to have them ..or call teh provider for them ..and you have to pay attention and insert them exactly ..and in the right way each number in its case..(the dots mark the next case)
In this picture is selected the USE the following IP addresses cause it is a static(same ip all the time ) but if your provider says that you do not have a static one ...than all you have to do in this window is to click the other point ..obtain an IP address automatically ..and confirm with OK ..in any of the cases..either if you insert the certain IP addresses..or choose an automatically one ..
after finishing with this ..you should have a local area connection by cable ..(Ethernet) into your computer ..
remember ..save that driver ..and if you think that you can not handle ..just call for those guys from the Ethernet provider..it supposed to be their business to fix the connection ..an obligation by the contract ..

The battery will be dead or faulty in that case regardless of whether it shows full charge or not.
Replacement Li-ion batteries are not expensive for that gateway unit.

That is very little info to go one. You need to provide hardware info, are you using wireless or wired? What network are you trying to connect to? Public, home, school, work? This is very difficult to answer without lots more info.

Laptop turns on but only Gateway screen with Boot Menu:<F10> BIOS Settings:<F2> comes up

Your machine isn't able to find the windows software on the hard drive, and most likely you need to get the hard drive checked. If you press F10, does it show you the hard drive?
If so, you probably need to get windows reinstalled. If not, it's likely time to get a new hard drive.
It's an easily accessible part to get to, so the repair shouldn't cost alot, and hard drives retail between $30 and $100 depending on size and speed.
You will need to install windows on it afterwards.

Did you download the drivers via model or serial number. Generally the webcams drivers that come with Gateway are in three. Be sure you unistall the one that doesn't work before installing the other, restarting your computer each time. Also check the dates of the drives compared to the time you purchase the machine, some driver may be old or updated. Lastly, which i am sure you've done, make sure you have chosen the correct Operating System if you are not downloading the file from the web cammed computer.

You must install it again so it obtains the new addresses from your new hardware configuration. You'll need your installation CD and can find instructions/downloads on the Buffalo site (support).

Gateway laptop skips

Make certain it is the correct media for the drive. If it is CDR or CDRW media, make sure it is rated for the write speed of the drive. High Speed media for a High Speed drive is labeled with the High Speed logo. If you are testing with an audio CD, play it in your home stereo first to make sure the disc works.

Check also the disc if it has scratches that's why it skips when played. Try a known good CD.
