Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Hello, My laptop was recently dropped on to concrete the other day while open. It continues to go to the black screen and when I run a test on it it says the Hard Drive is not connected or there is not one. I was wondering if there was any way to to fix this problem without consulting a professional due to shortage of funds. Thank you.

Hi Zlacrymosa:
The only way to do this is by professional intervention. When you drop a hard drive, it's not uncommon for the platter to lock; and heads to crash onto the platter. You may want to try us TechRx, Inc. we have special tools and a cleanroom to work on stuck drives. If it is just motor sticktion; there is a possibility of success. We offer free initial diagnostics, which may help with the funds shortage.

Here is a hardware test you can run to test the video and lcd screen. That came with your laptop

Diagnostics before windows using the F12 Diagnostics
* Reboot and press F12 to enter the Boot Menu
* When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
* The computer begins to run the Pre-boot System Assessment, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
* If the Pre-boot System Assessment completes successfully, you receive the message Booting Dell Diagnostic Utility Partition
* Press any key to continue
* Press any key to start the Dell Diagnostics from the Diagnostics utility partition on your hard drive
* After the Dell Diagnostics loads and the Main Menu screen appears, click the button for the option you want to run -
Express Test = Performs a quick test of devices. The test typically takes 10 to 20 minutes and requires no interaction on your part
Extended Test = Performs a thorough check of devices. The test typically takes 1 hour or more and requires you to answer questions periodically
Custom Test = Tests a specific device. You can customize the tests to be run
Symptom Tree = Allows you to select tests based on a symptom of the problem you are experiencing
* When you have finished running a test, close the screen to return to the Main Menu screen. To exit the Dell Diagnostics and reboot the computer, close the Main Menu screen

during the test it will BEEP ! it is asking you if colored bars are displayed. if the bars look ok then your screen is fine but if during anytime of this test and you see the distortion you described then its the LCD screen or LCD cable

hope that helps

Try running memory test when the laptop works. Boot from the Memtest86+ and let the test run overnight. If you get memory errors, try replacing the RAM module.

Black Screen

Unfortunately you LCD screen has been damaged due to the heavy fall. The only way to sort out is to change the lcd panel but as you know this might prove expensive. Hence you will need to take your phone for an estimate to the nearest friendly mobile service centre and get a quote. If you can ask them to put in one which has been salavaged from another it might be helpful and cheap, So try this out and hope you get lucky. Good day

You've broken the screen. They can be replaced, checkout the Nikon support web pages. Or a good local photography retailer

Before committing to a repair, its always worth checking to see if its an economically viable option.

I dropped my blackjack II on the concrete the other day, at first when the screen was supposed to black out it would go to a white screen, then when it stopped doing that the screen would flicker off and...

Fixing it will most likely cost close to getting a new one. Getting a new phone is certainly the easiest answer.

The problem with screen damage, is that most of the screens use lcds (liquid crystal displays) if damaged its hard to repair something that is mostly liquid.

Sorry about your phone. I hope its insured.

Sorry to be a few days in getting back to you on your request. Our system of alerting us about these requests does not work properly right now and I've been distracted by a recent death in our family.

Do you still need help with this?

Your problem is quite similar to a 'stuck' button. But, from your description it occurs when you press the Power Button. Can you tell if the button feels recessed after using it or does it pop backup up as expected? If it returns to normal for you and this behavior returns as well. Do you power off by removing the power cord and battery? or are you able to do this by holding the power button down for 5 seconds?

If you have to remove the battery and power cord, you will have to take this to a service center or a local tech who has a reputation of working on Laptops. I suspect a bad switch that would need to be replaced or examined and repaired. This requires the Laptop to be disassembled and you should not do this on your own unless you are absolutely confident in your ability to not affect any components and damage them in the process. Disassembling a Laptop has its hazards and people who do this without foreknowledge usually damage their laptop.

I do not support you doing this by yourself but to rely upon an Expert Repair Location.
