Im guessing that the belt is already broken. If so first take the two screws that are exsposed after you remove the lint trap. Next use a flat bade screw driver and insert it in the seam between the front and top approximately 2 inches in from the side. There is a spring clip 2 inches in on each side you have to trip by shoving the screwdriver in about 1 1/4 inches. The easiest way is to tap them with a hammer. (pry upward on the top and lift it all the way up it will be hinged on the back. Now looking down each front corner you will see a 5/16 screw approximately 8 inches down from the top. Remove these screws and the front can be tilted outward and lifted straight up. You will see a door switch and wires attached to the front remove the wires. Set the front aside and out of your way. (if you are a very flexable person you can replace the belt from the front but us normal human beings have to remove the back) Next go to the back and remove the back panel there are several 5/16 hex head screws around the outside edge of the back panel remove them and set the back panel aside. Inside on the bottom left side as you face the back of the dryer you will see a motor and a tensioner. The tensioner may still be in place it goes in a slot in the bottom of the dryer next to the pulley on the motor. Remove the old belt it usually is laying in the bottom. Put the new belt on the drum by putting it around the drum from the front. The belt goes around the drum across the pully on the motor with the tensioner and its pully putting tension of the belt to take up any slack. Then just put everything back in reverse order. Make sure the tensioner pully rotates smoothly if it does not this can cause your belt to break or usually get thrown off the pully. Remember to unplug your dryer before starting and clean the excess lint out of the bottom of the dryer as a good prevention to other problems. I hope this helps

The drum in my Kenmore gas dryer (over 20 years old) will not spin around. There is still heat, but clothes will not spin around. Does the belt need to be replaced or should I get a new dryer altogether?...

Hi,

There can be many reasons why your dryer will not start or turn...

The most common causes are the belt breaking or jumping off, or the motor going bad...

Here are a couple of tips that I wrote will help you to figure out why your dryer will not run...

Dryer will not spin. Its a propane dryer and the heat is fine...just wont spin. I assume there is a belt somewhere?

Belt is on the inside. It wraps around the motor pulley and the drum. Opening the dryer is required. Make sure unit is unpluged 1st. Very easy repair. Belt can be ordered online and shipped to you. Model and serial number will be required. Probably about a $15 - $30 repair. Should take about 30 -45 minutes on the long side. Instruction to open your dryer should be here: http://www.partselect.com/dryer+open-cabinet+repair.htm

Trying to replace belt around drum. reached in under drum to put belt around both pulleys but the belt is not tight. any suggestions?

You need to ensure you have the belt properly routed (ribbed side facing the drum) around the motor pulley and the tensioner pulley.

Since you posted no BRAND NAME or MODEL NUMBER, the only advice I can provide you with is to go to repairclinic.com and select "Get Repair Help". Under the Repair Help section, select "Dryer". Under Dryers, there is a link for dryer belt diagrams. There is an extensive list of diagrams to choose from based on manufacturer. If you do not find what you are looking for there, or if you have further questions, please post back with your MODEL NUMBER and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Replacing belt, can't seem to get belt tight. Need to know how to wrap belt around pulleys.

You can find the belt routing for your Maytag here:
http://www.repair-help.com/kb/index.php?article=105
If it won't tension, perhaps you have the wrong belt. The correct belt can be purchased from your local source or this website.

For those of you with other Brands of dryers start here:

Note: After unplugging dryer; The belts for most regular dryers are accessed by removing the front panel.

Dryer belt replacement

To replace the belt, you have to take the front off the dryer and lift out the drum. With the new belt, place it around the drum and with the drum in place put the excess belt through the idler pulley or bracket (depending on your model), then around the motor pulley. You push the bracket or idler arm toward the motor to get the "loop" of the belt around the pulley on the motor. Hope this helps! Paul Hoffmanns
