You probably will not believe this ,,,but the automatic oil shutdown switch is acting up ,,,replace that and you will no problem. Had many similar instances and that was the problem,,,its found just about where the oil plug is on the SIDE of the engine where you check the oil level,,most have two places you can check ,,,most of the time if you are looking at the pull cord from the front of the engine,,its on the right side just above the oil plug,,its a little gold look box with i think three wires going into it ,,,if you have to you can just unplug the wires and **** them together and that WILL take care of the problem,,,the oil sensor is malfunctioning and causing it to backfire and not run properly so that you will get out and check to see whats up,,,,thats how they act!!

Bace line carb settings hope this helps
The adjustment on the bottom of the float bowl is the main jet. Adjust this one for high speed. The one on the side is your low speed adjustment. The one on top is your idle speed adjustment. Adjust your main jet at full throttle adjust it by ear till the motor smooths out. The low speed adjust it just off of idle. I always adjust by the sound to were the motor sounds the best. Your lucky newer engines don't have these adjustments.

I installed new carb. on my tecumseh 5hp. snow king and it wont start. I have spark and gas is flowing out of carb.

This can be very frustrating and tough on the back and arm.
Always confirm the the fuel tank valve is open and the stop/run switch is in run position

It takes three things to run:
  1. Compression. This is the resistance that you feel as you crank the engine. Some engines have compression release to assist getting the rotation started. You should be able to feel the compression stroke as you rotate, Remove the plug and you can easily tell the deference. If it had, last time used, been running and starting with no problem I would assume that the compression is OK. Gauges are available to check. at lease 120 PSI
  2. Spark. It is near impossible to lose the spark timing on these. It can only be magnitude and presence. If in doubt about the condition of spark plug replace. I usually lay the plug on top of the head with wire attached and observe for the spark. No spark no start.
  3. Confirm that the throttle is in the wide open position. It is possible during the repair the spring or rod has closed the throttle air valve. Air/fuel mixture is always hard to trouble shoot. I use open choke and starter fluid to conform that compression and spark are working. After that I will choke on a cold motor and pull listening for the first fire. At the first fire I would usually half choke and pull to first run. Full choke for many pulls will only flood engine!! If no joy then I would allow engine to vent and go back to start fluid. If it will run on start fluid than either carburetor is messed up or quality of fuel is bad.
If after several tries and fuel is certain to be good remove plug and check for gas. It is possible that the new carb float valve or mixture adjustment screws are messed up.

I have an older craftsman snow blower 10 hp. It starts ok with full choke, runs ok half choke, backfires with no choke-run position.

It's too lean; not enough fuel mixed with the air. Look for the main mixture screw--it should be a large screw with a spring under it on the carburetor. Run the engine until it's warm.

With the engine running, turn the screw outward (lefty-loosey) about 1/8 turn slowly and see if it improves. Slowly turn the screw back and forth until it runs best with the choke completely off. Then set it 1/8 turn richer (turn screw outward 1/8 turn) than the best position.

Reason for doing this: Conditions change, even the barometric pressure. Small engines run okay if they are a little rich but not if they are a little lean.

Won t start

If the plug is wet, it is likely fouled and the cylinder flooded. Dry off the plug and reinstall it. Open the choke and throttle so the carb throat is wide open and crank the engine over. This will evacuate excess fuel out of the cylinder faster then anything. It should fire at least once.

Mower starts and runs for 10 - 15 seconds, then dies. Will almost start again, but soon will not even kick over. After a while, it will start for a few seconds. This is a 15 horse Tecumseh that looks...

It sounds like a carburetor issue. The jets are probably gummed up from the old gas that was in it. Remove the carburetor and clean it out with a can of carb cleaner. Then reinstall.

I have an old pressure washer that uses Tecumseh H30 engine. After pumping the choke bulb on the carb, it will crank, run maybe 5 seconds and quit. Thanks

When you get it started, move the choke to the middle, then let it warm up. you might have to move the choke back and forth until it warms up, keep the throttle wide open.

Despite changing the sparkplug and proper choking, etc. no start

The most likely culprit is a clogged carb - a very common problem indeed on Tecumseh motors. Pull the carb off, open it up, spray everything with cheap carb cleaner (especially the bottom "bolt" that hold the float cover making sure it sprays out of at least two sides as that "bolt" is also the jet), make sure everthing lines back up as you pulled it apart and now try to start it up again! Bet it works, I see it all the time on small engines left with small amounts of gas in the system. Good luck, and I hope that gets ya runnin!
