I have tried over & over to reset the lamp hours in this manner. I've tried on the remote & the control panel. Could I be doing something wrong? I read the manual first.

    Thank you,
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding StandBy Mode but I don't think so. It keeps saying "Not Applicable" whenever I press the buttons. When you say press them as quickly as possible, you do not mean all at once do you? I've tried both ways. Thank you for your help.

Standby mode is when projector plugs in and power indicator lit, its is standby mode, if you press power button that will turn On projector.
so projector should not be power up but plugged in.
then press mentioned keys but simultaneously (not all together)

To reset the lamp timer:
1) With the projector plugged in and turned off, press the 'ON/STANDBY' button to put the projector in 'STANDBY' mode. NOTE: You have to press the button on the projector itself, you cannot use the remote for this step (this is not clear in manual).
2) Now, using the remote, press the following keys in order: RESET, <--, -->, ENTER.
3) Timer should now read '0
If it is a rear projection then:

1• The procedure may vary from Sony model to model. These procedures are for Sony Rear Projections only. For other models, please consult your manufacter's website. All rear projections have the option of reseting the lamp hours. This helps since you will know how many hours your last lamp ran for. Normal lamps should run between 5000 to 8000 hours.
Try the following procedure:
Please be cautious when entering service mode. Following the information below and you will have no problems.
•2 Enter service mode by pressing Display, 5, vol +, Power On.
•3 Proceed to the Option-E screen by pressing the 2 or 5 button
Option-E 0 0
•4 Change data to 1 using the 3 button on the remote
Option-E 0 1
•5 Press Mute Enter to write data.

Noticed a yellow hue in the centre of the image projected by BOTH of my second-hand Sony VPL PX40's.

Bit of a common problem with Sony projectors of the era that they often had problems with fading and/or cracking of one or more the LCD panels - especially the blue ones for some reason, leading to the type of problem you are experiencing. No point in swapping components either as they will both have similar faults - although replacing an LCD in a video projector is almost impossible without the manufacturers jigs to mechanically align them afterwards anyway...
