A common cause of the problem you just described is a lid switch malfunction or lid strike (actuator) problem. Symptoms may include, filling and stopping on the intial fill cycle, stopping right after the wash cycle, not advancing to rinse or spin cycles, and a wash tub that will not drain.

The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike" or "Actuator") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3557193-replacing_a_lid_switch

On some models, the lid switch is located under the top casing by one of the lid hinges. You will know if you if you have this type of switch, because it does NOT have a lid strike (actuator) and the small hole on the right hand side of the wash tub will not be present. This type of switch is actuated (toggled) by a rod on the lid hinge. With this type of switch, if you locate it and it can be toggled by hand, you may only need to adjust the actuator rod by bending it slightly.

NOTE: You do not have to drain or bail the water from the washer tub to perform this repair. Once a defective lid switch is replaced, the washer should drain normally.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The average price of a replacement lid switch is about $25 - $35 if you perform the repair yourself. The lid strike is usually less than $5. Prices will vary between sites so shop and compare.

My washing machine stopped working in mid-cycle. No agitation is going on and I could not drain it but putting to spin.

Make sure the washer fills with cold water from the beginning of the cycle because most washers have a cold only rinse cycle and if your cold water valve is bad then the machine will stop mid cycle because it cannot fill the washer for the rinse cycle. Secondly, it helps to know which washer you have so please enter more info next time you ask a question. Good luck.

Hi David if the timer is not cycling the tub will not drain ,the washer will not complete cycles, second check the lock switch on the door. this can stop the timer and the tub from draining. when not cycling the timer is at fault , this could be two problems, 1st when everything stops check the door safety switch , 2nd listen for the timer, if it stops running. good luck ,geodaws

Maytag Washer never stops running, goes from 1 cycle to the next

The timer is not stopping the agitate mode. And the timer is suppose to have its own off setting at the end of cycles. Suspect pretty strongly that the timer is at fault. Cant say for sure without looking at a wire diagram and eliminating any other controls.

If this helps you please rate me as high as possible.
If it doesn't help you please rediscribe your problem in more detail to help me understand, post back and I will follow up.

Top loaing washer fills then mostly empties repeatedly

Check you drain line. It may be too low or the air gap is blocked at the drain pipe.
A test is remove the drain pipe from the wall drain. Hold it up high and turn the washer on to fill.
If it fills and stops, then starts agitation. Repair the drain hose.

Hotpoint washer fills begins to agitate then refills continously.

Very likely your drain hose is set too low. You can solve this with a standpipe or a kit called a siphon break.

Fills, washes, but won't drain or spin

Possible your outlet filter is blocked, it needs periodic cleaning, which the user can do himself. Locate where this is from your user's manual. Clean out, re-fix. Next it could be the hose that goes from the bottom of the tub to the filter pump; check the former first.
