Hooking up the vacuum assembly is done at the poolside skimmer. there is a vacuum plate that goes over top of the skimmer basket, allowing you to leave the basket in place to catch any larger debris. the plate will have a fitting at the top to attach the vacuum hose. before turning the pump on, be sure to bleed the air out of the vacuum hose so the pump does not run dry.

if this is a new thing for you (like you just bought the house with the pool, or something like that), please post any further questions in the comment section, i realize this can all be sort of overwhelming at first, and often the previous owners don't leave you all the pieces you need!

Before you hook up the vacuum attachment, you want to flood the vacuum hose with water or your pump will be air locked. Submerge the hose and fill it with water. These centrifugal pumps must be primed in order to work. Another method is to fill the vacuum hose with water from a garden hose.

Sand filter not filtering! It's been 4 weeks of

Air enters from the front of the pump, usually it is just the lid o-ring (over the pump basket) that needs to be lubed or replaced.
Sand filters do not filter fine particles very well. When vacuuming it is best to set the backwash valve to the "waste" setting. This allows the debris to bypass the filter and go directly to waste. Mind that you are removing water from the pool while on that setting.

sand filters only have limited filtration. If the dirt is very fine such as dead algae, it will go right through the filter. Use a clarifier to help give the filter finer filtration. Do not vacuum until you can see what you are doing, then vacuum on 'waste'

If they are to much for the pump basket you can try filter by-pass. Another thing could be a tool called a leaf master that hooks on your garden hose and sweeps any and all light stuff from pool and collects in a bag big enough to hold it all in one sitting.

What setting should I have my Hayward Sand Filter system on when I am vacumming out my pool?

Your pool filter should be set on "filter" for normal vacuuming. If you have a heavy debris load or an extremely dirty pool, you might want to vacuum with the "waste" setting, if your filter has one.
