I have a problem setting the High and low carb needle adjustment tto get the right mixture. Is there a number of turn from fully close needle position initially required ?

Try starting with both needles turned out one and a half turns, than fine tune from there. Make sure you are on the rich side of both when finished.

Bought new carb for ryobi blower need to set up carby so it will start

Set both the high and low mixture settings two full turns back from the closed setting(full clockwise).. Set idle speed for all ahead full.

Start sucker and after a warmup throttle it down and then start adjusting the low mixture screw for fastest idle. Then lower idle some more but not to point where it starts to run rough. Then rev the sucker to high speed and adjust the high mixture for max speed. You may have to make a slight adjustment on the high speed to get a smooth transition from low speed to high.

You can only adjust the mixture for the low running speed from 1000 rpm to about 3000 rpm it's done via a small screw on the side of the carb it should be set at about 1 3/4 turn a out from being fully richen it screw it out more.the higher speed mixture is changed by either changing the main jet size or raising the height of the jet needle by moving a small e clip.

Normally the larger of the two screws is the fuel needle, the smaller of the two is the air needle.
Before you remove or try to adjust your low and high speed jets you should always count the number of turns it takes to lightly seat the idle mixture screw and high speed needle adjusting screws.
Be sure to write the number of turns down on a piece of paper so you will know how many turns from the seated position to open the jets when you go to reinstall them, or if you remove them for cleaning or replacement.
Normally you will adjust your idle jet to 1/2 to 3/4 turn open from the bottom seated position.
Then you will re-adjust the low speed of the engine when the engine is warm by turning the idle screw in or out till the engine runs smoothly at idle speed, around 1200 RPM.
The high speed jet is adjusted to 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 open from the bottom seated position, after the engine is warm. Then re-adjusted by turning the High Speed jet adjustment screw in or out till the motor runs smoothly at high speed.
But always use the "lightly seated" method if you have not changed the settings.

Hi, I will try to help you solve this problem by checking the easiest things first. Do you have a shutoff valve under the tank and is it open? Did you check for dirt inside the tank that might be blocking gas flow, and the fuel line also? Have you looked for loose bolts and gaskets at carb that could let air in and prevent suction bringing gas in combustion chamber? When was it last used and how old is the gas in the tank or has everything dried out? As gas evaporates it leaves a sticky sludge that can plug up small ports or like the inlet needle not letting fuel in.
I really think the problem is with the carburetor either adjustment or that it needs cleaning. Look at the carb and maybe even make a small diagram to remember where everything goes specially the governor rod and spring.
Shut off the fuel valve if you have one. If you don't go ahead and remove the carb from engine. Disconnect the governor rod and spring, the ends are just bent in a special way so you can slide them out of the holes by moving the carb in different positions. Remember which holes they come from, (very important) and try not to bend anything. A little patience is helpful. Now remove the fuel line, lift up the carb as you do and get a golf tee or a pencil to plug the fuel line so gas does not come out.
Remove the special bolt at bottom of carb, it has small holes drilled into it that have to be cleaned very well as they are part of the high speed mixture circuit. Look for a very, very small hole drilled on the side of this bolt towards the thread end of it. There will be a slot machined in the threads and this is where this hole is. Make sure it is clean, (do not use any wires to clean these passages as they might be damaged) The high speed mixture adjustment needle is usually part of this bolt machined into it but not always. If it is not then the high speed port is fixed and has no adjustment.
Now you will find the float, gently move it up and down to see if the inlet needle might be stuck which could be the main problem, not letting gas in. The float is held on with just a pin that you pull out to remove the float and inlet needle. (before removing the pin look for a little wire clip that holds the inlet needle to the float. Remember exactly how it is positioned) Now remove the screw situated on the side of carb, it has a spring on it. This is the low speed idle mixture adjust needle. (BEFORE removing either the high or low adjust needle, turn clockwise until GENTLY seated and remember the number of turns for each one)
Now clean all parts with paint thinners or carb cleaner. (NOT rubber parts) Blow low pressure air into all parts. On the outside of the carb look for a small vent hole, either on the low adjust screw side or the other side, it is again very small and has to be clear. (between me and you I sometimes cheat and use, being very careful a small brass wire or stiff plastic to help clean ports and passages when badly plugged. If you decide to go that way, you do on your own.) Before reassembly check needles for any damage like having been seated too hard and they are marked. If any damage and gaskets don't look too good get a carb kit, they are not that expensive.
Now carefully reassemble. A start for the high and low speed mixture adjust needles. The low screw on until lightly seated and back out 1 turn. The high speed mixture needle on the bottom of carb on bowl bolt, turn in until lightly seated and turn back out 11/2 turns. This is what the manufacturers suggest as a start that should get the engine going to make final adjustments, They are usually very close to being right. There is a screw on top of the carb, this is to adjust the idle speed so that when you release the throttle it will not stop on you. Adjust the way you like your idle speed to be at. I hope this gets you going. Final adjust of carb needle screws is not too hard if you take your time.
Do not go too lean, which means not enough gas in the fuel air mixture as it could make your engine run too hot. When you turn a needle screw in (clockwise) there is less fuel and when you turn out there is more gas in the mix of air and fuel. When you make adjustments go 1/8 turn at a time. Another point is when you push on the throttle to get more speed and it sort of misses or hesitates. turn low mixture screw out (counterclockwise) to get more gas in mix until it accelerates without missing.
Reinstall the carb on the engine, (you might need a new gasket, I suggest you get a new one) Be specially careful with the 2 governor linkages on the carb. If you got a carb kit there should be one included.
I hope I have given you enough info to do this. If you do this yourself I am assuming that you have a bit of mechanical experience as this is not that easy to do. I certainly hope this is helpful so best regards and good luck. I will gladly answer any more questions.

The standard setting on needles is to screw them in all the way and then back them out 1 and a half turns.

You need to set the mixtures for the carburetor. You will find a Low and High adjustment screw. turn the low adjustment screw out. You will notice that the rpms should start increasing. keep turning it out until the rpms start to drop then turn it back in a quarter of a turn. You may need to readjust the idle speed so the chain doesn't turn during idle. Do the same for the high adjustment screw.

Will not tick over how do i set up the carb for this and normal running.

Most carbs are the same. Close both the high and low needles. (Note: Do not overtighten, you can damage needle.) Open them up 2 full turns. Start the engine and let it warm up. May be a little tough to start if you have removed carb and rebuilt. With engine running pull throttle to full capacity. Now close the low needle slowly, listening to the engine. When it starts to get lean you will hear the rpm start to go back down. Make sure you stop at the most optimum setting. At this point open the low needle 1/4 turn so as not to have too lean a mixture. Please note that the engine must be warm in order to get the right setting. You may have to do this a couple of times to get it right. Then move on to the high needle and do the same thing. Once you set both needles it should be fine.

How do I adjustment the carb on an almost brand new weed trimmer?

The H is for high rpm (Main mixture) and the L is for Low rpm (Idle Mixture). First turn in both screws all the way in and then turn them both out 1 and a half turns. Pump the primer bulb if the equipment has one. Start the engine, once it is idling, turn the L (Idle Mixture) screw out (counterclockwise) from the preliminary setting until the engine speed decreases (rich). Note the position of the needle. Now turn the adjusting needle in (clockwise). The engine speed may increase, then it will decrease as the needle is turned in (lean). Note the position of the needle. Set the adjusting needle midway between the rich and lean settings as in the picture below. Don't touch the throttle during this procedure. Once you have found the best idle speed for the engine then you need to adjust the high rpm. This process is the same as with the idle rpm process but you need the to hold the throttle wide open while you are adjusting the H (Main Mixture) needle on the carburetor.

My answer:

It appears you have a B&S Vanguard series engine on your Genset.

Briggs & Stratton 9 HP Vanguard OHV Horizontal Engine, Model# 185432-0242-E1

MAX RPM's - 3600

I'm hoping you first got all the contaminated sugar & gas mixtureout of the Genset's gas tank, fuel lines (replaced the fuel filter aswell), and the engine's Carb before running it. Hopefully you DID NOTrun the engine even 1 second with that contaminated sugar gas - elsewise the damage may already have been done to the engine & the OIL!Did you change the engine OIL as well? Hope so! Did you try run it thatway with or without the air/fuel Adjustment Screws set properly? If so- we can only hope for the best here.

It's hard to say if any internal damage wasdone unless the Carb first is fully broken down, thoroughly cleanedout, and then checked forproper Float setting, then re-assembled, and then adjusting theFuel/Air Adjustment Screw(s) properly.

If all looks good with the Carb Bowl then you will next need to check the air/fuel mixture Adjustment Screw(s).

That missing plastic top off the Idle AdjustScrew head can either be replaced by something closely matching it byusing Super-glue or else 5-minute Epoxy, or else can be replaced with acrimped on slotted metal cap. If you have a Dremel Tool with a diamondcut wheel you can just cut a slot in the top of the Idle Adjust Screwhead for use with a slotted screwdriver. Hopefully you are handy!

On your B&S Vanguard engine there is probably only 1 air/fuelmixture Adjustment Screw - as from the Carb parts diagram that you canfind by following the directions further below for reference. If youhave any missing parts from the Genset sabotage then those might beordered from that B&S parts list there as well.

Usually there are 2 Air/Idle Adjustment Screws side by side, but yours looks to only have 1. (See diagram at that B&S site)

If there are 2 needle valves on your Carb then turn both of them in CW just until they are fully closed or seated.

Do not force them or you may damage them.

If you have 2 adjustment screws do the following below - otherwise just set the IDLE Adjustment Needle Valve Screw accordingly.

Open the High Speed needle valve adjustment screw 1-1/2 turns CCW, andthe Idle Speed needle valve adjustment screw 1 turn CCW. Normally youcould open both up the same 1-1/2 turns CCW without any harm. Either way is fine.

This will give you the initial adjustment starting point so the enginewill start and warm up so you can do the final adjustment.

You should make sure that the air cleaner is on before you make any adjustments to the Carb.

To make the final adjustments you will need to move the governor (throttle) speed lever to the IDLE position.

Set the Idle SPEED adjusting screw (and NOT the Idle Adjustment NeedleValve Screw) to get approx 1750 RPM - if you have a TACH all the better(you have to hold the throttle lever against the screw while doingthis).

Turn the Idle Needle Valve in CW just until the RPMs slow or the enginestarts to cut out. This is a lean mixture btw. Then turn it out CCWjust past where it will idle smoothly. It will run unevenly, but thatis OK. Now turn it back in CW so that it's just halfway between the twopoints. Then release the throttle lever.

Then do the same with the High Speed Needle Valve Adjustment Screw withthe governor (throttle) set to the FAST position. You do not have tohold the throttle while doing the high speed valve. The engine shouldrun smoothly, and also accelerate smoothly from Idle to Fast withoutany hesitation or stumbling. If not - readjust as needed to get aslightly richer mixture.

The Genset AC Output Voltage is all factory preset and pre-determinedby the engine MAX RPM, and also by the LOAD you are running on thegenerator head. Use to a good DVM to double check the output AC voltageaccording to your Operator's Manual, unless your Genset has its ownanalog AC panel meter.

Please do post me a reply as to fixing your problem here, and the resolveto it by following my recommendations above. Also please rate mytroubleshooting fix as well.

This Carb may have a Float Needle and O-Ring Seat or may have just the Float Needle with a Black Rubber Tip and NO O-Ring Seat.

If the Float Needle is all metal, then there is a flat O-ring seat inthe inlet port that the needle seats against. If the float needle isthe long needle type with the Black Rubber Tip, then there is NO O-ringseat and the Float Needle seats right against the Carb housing.
