Question about Fujitsu Mobile MHM2200AT 20 GB Hard Drive

I have a Fujitsu MHM2200AT hard drive from my dead laptop and wish to retrieve the data. The connector looks like an IDE, BUT it isn't quite. The pin spacing is slightly smaller and there are more pins. What is this connector and can I obtain a female adaptor so I can install the drive and read the data? Thank you. Steve

Yes this is a MINI IDE. Please Obtain a USB to IDE HDD converter, Dongle, these have BOTH the Mini & Normal IDE connections on it.
You DO NOT have to use external power with the Mini, BUT ensure you connect it up correctly, it's easy to get it wrong, and in doing so may damage the HDD.

I am looking for a usb cable to connect my computer to a Toshiba HDD2D60 160MB hard drive that I took out of a dead laptop. I cannot find a cable to fit the 22-pin hard drive.


Hmmm, I presume that by "22-pin hard drive," you are referring to an IDE hard drive. A laptop IDE hard drive has two rows of 22 pins with one of the pins actually missing on the bottom row. This is used as a key to insure that the hard drive is installed properly. The Toshiba drive that you mentioned is a SATA drive which is based on completely different technology and will not work inside a laptop that uses IDE. As such, you have two items that are incompatible.

If what you want is something that will potentially allow you to use an IDE hard drive on a modern computer, then you can get an external 2.5-inch IDE enclosure and attach that by USB. These are easily found at places such as NewEgg ( http://www.newegg.com/ ) and are fairly inexpensive with the more reliable units typically being around $15-20.

One word of caution, though: if you have a hard drive based on IDE technology, chances are that it is old, slow, and quite possibly already dead, so you may be wasting money on something that is not really worth your time.

Most people today with careers on the go have a laptop. With this mobility comes great sacrifice and that's because of the risk of hard disk failure thorough dropping or mishandling. When this happens the only thing on their minds is if they'll ever see their data again. This wouldn't be such a crisis if they recently made a backup but then again how many do. So if your laptop has broken or stopped working then here is what you can do to retrieve the data yourself.<br /> <br /> <u>We're going to assume that the hard drive survived and is still functional.</u><br /> <br /> First of all you're going to need to dismantle the laptop to remove the hard drive. As there are so many different types of laptops out there I can't give you a universal way to dismantle it, if you want the dismantling instructions just type <b>How to dismantle Your laptops model name here laptop</b> for example into Google or Yahoo!<br /> <br /> We want to be able to access the data on the hard drive so you'll need a IDE to USB cable (for older drives) or a SATA to USB cable (for newer drives). This all depends of which connector your laptop's drive has. You'll need a 12 volt source for the hard disk which can be obtained from a molex power cable in the PC.<br /> <br /> Plug the power from your power supply to the required power connector on the drive (normally a molex connector or newer thin power connecor on more recent power supplies that use SATA technology) and then plug the data cable USB into one of your free USB ports and boot up the PC.<br /> <br /> Look around in my computer and you should see the laptop hard disk listed, it should be seen as an external hard disk just like a flash drive when you plug it in. <br /> <br /> Copy over all the files and information that you want recovered to the desktop. Find socket for hard drive


HP part number 5188-5473 brings up the Asus A8N-LA motherboard, made especially for HP,

The rest of the number/letters do me no good.

I will elate some information based on the above, and see if it does you any good;

1) The Asus A8N-LA has connectors for two types of Harddrives;

A) IDE. Also known as PATA.

This type of Harddrive uses a flat ribbon IDE(PATA) data cable,

(The Asus name probably won't be on it. These two IDE data cables just happen to be made by Asus )

The connectors on each end have 40 socket holes. One socket hole will be blocked off. (Or should be) ONLY 39 socket holes are used.

A look at the connector on the motherboard;

Looking at the motherboard illustration, look at the Bottom/Right corner. There are two IDE connectors. They are marked as IDE 1, and IDE 2.

Scrolling down a little bit to the motherboard photo, you will see IDE 1 connector is Black in color, and IDE 2 is Blue in color.

The IDE (PATA) harddrive's data cable goes to IDE 1.
Optical drive/s (CD/DVD drive) goes to IDE 2.

This is the type of power cable from the Power Supply, that goes to an IDE (PATA) harddrive,

NOTE*
There is usually a square, or rectangle, or two bumps; used on the IDE ribbon cable connector, to line up with the connector on the motherboard, or harddrive, or optical drive.

It is called a Locating Lug.

This particular IDE data cable connector, has two raised bumps, for a Locating Lug.

It lines up with a Cutout in the motherboard's connector, or the harddrive's connector, or the optical drive's connector.

IF, there is NO Locating Lug, use the faint Red stripe on the side of the IDE data cable.
The red stripe is on the same side as Number 1 wire.

Number 1 wire goes to number 1 pin.
On a harddrive, or optical drive, number 1 pin is ALWAYS closest to the power cable connection,

Looking at the photo number 1 pin is on the Right side. It is closest to where the 4-pin Peripheral power cable plugs in.

B) SATA:

Looking at the motherboard photo, the Yellow, and Blue, and Black, and White connectors; to the left of the Blue IDE connector, and Black IDE connector; are SATA connectors.

SATA 1 is Black. This is where the SATA harddrive's data cable, is supposed to plug in.

The BEAUTY of SATA though, is that you can plug the harddrive into ANY of those SATA connectors on the motherboard, and BIOS will find the harddrive. (Or any other peripheral device)

An example of a SATA data cable, and it's connector,

The red SATA connector shown below the SATA cable example, is just a different style of SATA motherboard connector; than what your motherboard uses.

Note the L-shaped opening in the SATA data cable's connector.
Lines up with the L shape on the motherboard connector, or harddrive connector, or optical drive connector.

Most SATA data cable connectors, also have a Lock on them.
Sometimes it's a Lock you can easily see.

Most times, it is a small depression you depress with your thumbnail, or a little 'bulb' you depress.
Depress/unlock to plug the cable in, or remove the cable.

The 90 degree angle connector end, (As shown), plugs into the harddrive, or optical drive. The Straight connector end plugs into the motherboard.

This is an example of a SATA power cable,

Between it, and the SATA data cable connector, it is the larger of the two.
SATA power cable connector has 15-pins.
SATA data cable connector has 7-pins.

Also note the rectangular depression on the SATA power cable's connector. That is where you depress to unlock the connector.
The SATA power cable's connector also has an L-shaped opening.

2) IF, you are trying to hook up a laptop harddrive to this motherboard, you need to determine if the laptop harddrive is an IDE (PATA) type, or a SATA type.

How?
Easy.

There is a label on the laptop harddrive. It has the manufacturer code on it. Type the number/letters in your browser search bar, and click on the search icon. (Magnifying Glass)

Now purchase an external enclosure.

The external enclosure opens up, and the laptop harddrive goes inside, and plugs into an interface.

Close the external enclosure, and plug it's USB cable into any available, open USB port on your computer.

It will be a 2.5 external enclosure.
Harddrive's are measured across their width.

A desktop harddrive is 3.5 inches across in width.
A laptop harddive is 2.5.

I have a working hard drive (Barracuda 7200.7) from a 2007 HP Pavilion a430n that contains files that I would like to retrieve.


Your description has me confused. I'm not clear on which power and data cables you are using. You described pulling one cable from first hard drive and connecting it to your second drive. Extra power connections should have been in a loose wire bundle somewhere in the computer. (Often they are tucked into an unused drive bay.)

The SR1720NX has 2 SATA controllers and two IDE controllers. Thus it can have 2 SATA and 4 IDE devices. The computer sometimes shipped with a SATA hard drive or an IDE hard drive. In all cases, the hard drives must be connected to the data cable (and to the motherboard) and then the power connection from the power supply has to be connected. So there should be 2 cables plugged into each drive. The optical drive is usually an IDE drive for this model, also a master drive.

The IDE power connection is a large 4-pin Molex connector; the SATA power cables are a smaller 5 pin connector. There is also a small 4 pin connector that powers a floppy drive, if present. IDE data cables are a wide 40-pin ribbon cable (sometimes an 80-pin cable for master/slave). The SATA data cable is a 15 pin cable.

First make sure that the jumper on the drive from the A430n is across the two pins in the second position (counting from the side away from the power connection). This is the cable select option. Next make sure that the IDE cable is firmly connected to both drives and the motherboard. (I've sometimes loosened the data cable while connecting the drives.) Finally check that the appropriate power cables are firmly connected to all the drives. Then power up the computer. (With the second drive on the Slave connection, if the device on the Master connection isn't powered up/recognized, then weird things may occur.)

BTW: you should be alert to the power needs for the computer. The original power supply could be overloaded with the extra drive. You might be better off using an external drive enclosure (USB) or a USB/SATA/IDE dongle that leaves the drive out in the open. Connect these with extreme care following the directions for when to connect the power supply. Some enclosures won't work without reformatting the drive - you do not want one of those.

I have intalled my computer with windows xp professional before was xp, I didn't put a password or a username but now my computer is asking me to unter the password before I login!! My computer is Fujitsu...


During the boot up process you will see on the screen for a short amount of time press a certain key to enter set up

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS scroll down to set user password or supervisor password you can change or remove your password from there

Just wondering if I can use the mht2030at on a HP campaq nx5000 and what would I set my jumpers at?


The POWER and DATA connectors on 'mobile' hard-drive are a different size than on a desktop hard-drive. So, if you use the correct adapters, it can be used.

If you have an 80-pin IDE cable, set the drive to 'Cable Select' (not 'Slave' and not 'Master').

You will need to have someone pull the hard drive out of the laptop and extract the data from it. Chances are the data is still fine and can be retrieved. Your best bet is to find a local mom and pop type shop that can do this for you.

1 internal connection kit

The internal connect kit consists of 1 red USB connector cable
and 1 internal white male molex connector to SATA female power connector
( 1 yellow wire , 2 black wires , 1 red wire )

the external connect kit
consists of a 3 pin power adaptor (with a tiny plug to save space) feeding a power supply which powers either IDE thru a Molex connector or SATA through a supplied adaptor. Supplied also are data connectors to link the IDE or SATA hard drive with a USB port. Use this adaptor set to retrieve data from a hard drive when it is not mounted in a computer.
