Hi, I have an Emerson Quiet kool 12GJ14. I don't know how old it is neither do I know how long it is out of use. What do I need to check before pluging it in?

Without the Model Number, it's hard to know what knob fits your model. However, the link below, may provide some help. But, having the Model Number would be a bulls eye. Remove the front of the AC unit. There may be a manufacturer's data plate inside, which would provide the model number.
If your device doesn't list wattage, but it does list amps, then just multiply the amps times the voltage to get the watts. For example: amps x volts = watts x .30if you dont have any information you are sol.

GO TO HOME DEPOT AND BUY A CUT TO FIT FOAM FILTER FROM THEM IT IS THE SAME MATERIAL AND COSTS ALOT LESS BRING YOUR OLD ONE WITH YOU SO THEY CAN HELP YOU FIND THE RIGHT ONE. IF YOU WANT AN OEM FILTER I NEED THE MAKE AND MODEL# TO HELP YOU
