Question about Epson Expression 1640XL Flatbed Scanner

2 Answers

Epson Expression 1640XL. How can I clean the inside of the scanner? It seems to be hard to take the cover off. I loosened two screws from under the lid but then it is held by the locking screw that I do not know how to take out? Any idea?

    Thanks,sounds good.
As we have no picture of the scanner, can you be more precise about the location of the two screws toward the front of the scanner, please. Are the screws on the front side or on the sides close to the front. And how can I detect where they are located?

    Hello Michael,
    thanks for the advice.
I got stuck with the plastic carriage lock.
    How can I remove that?
Would be nice if you could give me an answer to that.

Remove the screws off the back and then the plastic carriage lock. Next, locate the two hidden screws toward the front of the scanner. The top four screws need to be to remove from the scanner cover and them there are two additional ones on the back plane of the scanner. The two round plastic covers conceal the last two screws very well. After that the cover lifts right off, and there's about ten more screws holding the glass tray down to the main chassis. The glass will then lift right off on it's tray, allowing access to clean the glass and sensor

There are two hidden screws toward the front of the scanner. So here (after removing the two screws) is the location of the top four screws to remove the scanner cover, there are two additional ones on the back plane of the scanner that are very obvious.
The two round plastic covers conceal the last two screws very well. After that the cover will lift right off, and there's about 10 more screws holding the glass tray down to the main chassis. The glass will then lift right off on it's tray, allowing access to clean the glass and sensor.

(I wish i could show you with photos, but I don't have this scanner with me anymore and I don't have any photo, who would think, this would be a problem for someone :-))

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Light lines are appearing in the same place on every scan

a couple possiblilities

you might have a bad scanner assembly
you might have dirt on the glass
you may also have dirt on the white strip that is taped to the top of frame which the scanner uses to calibrate. if you took the top cover off and flip it you will see the strip, cleaning can solve the problem. you will need a lint free cloth.
be careful, when you take the cover off, dust can quickly get on the glass.

thanks adi

Our Epson Scanners do not work from Photoshop CS4

Try using a separate scanner utility to do yr scans - not ideal but sorted my problem. I use the EPSOM scan utility with a Perfection 2400 scanner.

Funky look to images

Hi folks. I am the originator and have the solution to the problem. I feel a little stupid because I overlooked using a plastic insert/guide which is placed on the scanner, fitting on notches. It lets the scanner know to use the transparency device and provides a notch for film holder placement. It has been so long time since I used film ever since digital photography took over, I overlooked using this plastic insert. With it placed, I can scan film fine. Thanks
