Question about D-Link NetDefend DFL-700 Firewall

1 Answer

Faulty DFL-700 image - missing FWCore.cfg

I've a problem with a used DFL-700 unit.
At boot time (checked via serial connection)
it continues prompting the text reported below.
Trying to reset factory default via button or console
brings to the same results: nothing.

Tried to read the mini-ide flash/ide card on a notebook
with Linux (installing it as a hard drive) without any
results (the flash card doesn't get recognized).

Any ideas?
Dlink support gives no help or solution, since the unit
is outside warranty coverage.

The firmware cannot be upgraded until the Web interface is activated; an action that the error reported prevents to happen.

Tried to remove the flash device from the board, and using a 44 pin male-male 44 to a USB<=>notebook hard drive adaptor but neither Windows nor Linux (latest Knoppix) cannot see the flash device.

In the following days I'm going to try to attach the flash device via a 44 pin male-male to a 44 pin mini-ide to 40 pin IDE adaptor and connect all the things to a normal PC, not using the USB adaptor.

IDE controller I suppose is working correctly, since it loads the serial console code.

Possible problems:
1. IDE Flash device is damaged
2. IDE controller is damaged
2. Firmware is corrupt

Try and download the firmware, and install. You should then get a better idea if the IDE device or controller is bad if it won't install or see the device.

The serial code might not be loaded on the flash, but on a EPROM or embedded chip.

I will try and find out what the flash drive is formated with, so maybe you could update a normal hard drive and them clone it to the flash.

Ya if i only could reload win7 and yes u will lose all info on hdd even the dummy password he put on to lock hdd amazing only thing it wont reload windows

Step 1:
Restart your computer during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or F2 key

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS then using the arrow keys scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

Note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system

Note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to failsafe or optimised defaults after windows has loaded

your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation
the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd

Step 2:
For Windows users who switch and upgrade from Windows Vista, one difference will be immediately noticeable when installing or upgrading to Windows 7, i.e. Install Windows 7 setup wizard no longer prompts or asks for user selection of which edition of the operating system to install. Instead, each Windows 7 DVD disc or Windows 7 ISO image will automatically install the preset specific edition which it's confined to.

Although Microsoft does not provide an universal "one disc rules them all" Windows 7 installation media, however the function is indeed supported. User just need to delete and remove the ei.cfg from any Windows 7 ISO disc image to convert the image into universal disc of any edition Windows 7 installer. For user who has the ISO image of Windows 7, and wish to make it an universal installer for any and all supported editions of Windows 7, as shown in illustration below, now has an easier way to modify the ISO. Instead of manually unpacking and extracting the content of ISO image (or copying files from DVD) to HDD, deleting the ei.cfg and then repacking or rebuilding installation files back into ISO to burn, user can now eliminate troublesome procedures by making use of "ei.cfg Removal Utility". clip_image001.jpg The ei.cfg Removal Utility is a simple tool that will disable the ei.cfg from any Windows 7 ISO disc image, thereby converting the image into a "universal disc" that will prompt the user to select a preferred edition during setup. ei.cfg Removal Utility works directly to patch the ISO image, by toggling the deletion bit in the UDF file table to instruct the operating system to ignore and remove ei.cfg, or treat it as if it does not exist. Best of all, ei.cfg Removal Utility can reverse the patching to restore the ISO disc image to its original state when the tool is been used to apply on a disc image that previously been patched by the utility. ei.cfg Removal Utility is a standalone portable app, and thus no installation required. In fact, the program does not have much user interface. After selecting the target Windows 7 ISO, the disc image will be patched right away. So make sure a copy of ISO backup is done. Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your "((motherboard to your hard drive))" make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
another possible reason could be a memory dump you might be running to many programs at the one time placing to much strain on the CPU also you might not have enough RAM random access memory to check what is running when your computer is running scroll to the bottom toolbar right click select task manager applications and processes if you see something you dont need running select end now to check how much ram you have click start right click on my computer select properties you will see all of your computers details another way to check how much RAM you have click start all programs accessories system tools system imformation all of your computers imformation will be there try uninstalling a few unnecessary programs then click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to fix any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive this will schedule on a restart don

Laptop wont boot up after installing Genius F610

you need to run a nifty little program called Spinrite on your laptop. You can download it via BitTorrent HERE

you will need to use a program to burn the ISO image onto disk and make it bootable. I use PowerISO . It is very easy and straight forward. You can download it HERE (use the name: Dr.Upload
serial: SKSIP-7AIX1-8YWEZ-U197K-T88IE ) to remove restrictions.

Open the iso file using PowerISO. Now we have to make it a bootable disk image. Spinrite comes with FREEDOS instaled, but most laptops don't like using it.
Follow directions here on making a bootable image.

after burning your disk boot your system up with the cd. when you get to a prompt , ie C:\\ you will need to change it to your default cd drive mine is E:
after changing the drive letter type SPINRITE
the program will start - follow onscreen directions and change scan level to 5. after program finishes reboot after removing disk.

Connection to ftp closed by remote host

this will not be a problem of your firewall. it will almost certainly be a password problem. ftp uses ports 20 & 21 but if you have disabled the firewall this cannot be the cause.

Traceroute does not work

You have to allow the following:
ICMP type 8 (Echo) from your DMZ to the Internet (a.k.a outbound)
ICMP type 0 (Echo reply) from the Internet to your DMZ (a.k.a inbound)

This will be done by adding the rules in the firewall section of your DFL-700.

Dfl-1600 sytem restart

Sounds like the firmware is looping for some reason. Try this to reset defaults:
Step 1: Make sure the unit is powered off.

Step 2: Press and hold the reset button located on the back of the firewall. While continuing to hold the reset button, power on the firewall.

Step 3: Continue to hold the reset button for 30 seconds after the unit is powered on.

Step 4: Release the reset button and the firewall will be at factory default settings.

NAT Traversal

NAT traversal refers to the common problem in TCP/IP networking of establishing connections between hosts in private TCP/IP networks which use NAT devices Client-based IPsec VPN connections often do not work when passing through a NAT device as the IKE and IPsec protocols were not designed to work through NAT. NAT Traversal is an add-on to the IKE and IPsec protocols that allows them to work when being NATed. NAT traversal is only used if both endpoints support it. D-Link products that currently support NAT traversal include the DFL-200, DFL-700 and DFL-1100. Note: The DFL-80 and DFL-300 do not support NAT traversal.
