My DVD writer in my LG LS50a is broken and needs to be replaced. LG have advised that a standard IDE burner that fits will be ok for replacement but I have two questions. Firstly can I just buy any slim IDE DVD writer and secondly, I have found it very difficult to dismantle the laptop. Do you have any directions as to replace a disc drive in the LG LS50a? It does not seem like an easy task yet my laptop is not worth much these days that there is no point in spending so much money going to LG or the other computer guys who want to charge me an arm and a leg. Help!
plase make sure in ur mind without dvd also ur lg ls50 is worthy.

try a CD or DVD from a different package to make sure your CDs were not defective, try to use your cd on a fairly new pc, if it is seen as empty your dvd writer is broken and has to be replaced. it's cheap about 20$ You only need to take it out and see if it has a IDE(large) or SATA(smaller) connector to replace it with one that has the same connector.
Notebook repairs blogspot have many laptop troubleshooting and repairing tips to repair ur laptop. It has explained how to open a laptop. from that u can have idean how to troubleshoot ur laptop dvd drive.

as soon as a dvd writer drive only starts to play cd's, cdrw's or only reports that you have a CDRW drive when inserting a blank DVD, the writers laser is worn out or faulty and no longer recognises dvd's, and so needs replacing i'm afraid, but as you may know not all dvd drives are hot swapable and need to be replaced by a repairer.
You need XP service pack 2 or later installed on your notebook. Does your notebook detect other USB drvices, if not your USB port on the PC is gone. If the USB prt is working and you have XP service pack 2 installed then you probably got a bum DVD drive so return it and get another.
LG does not post their service manuals on the internet so it will be more difficult.
Make sure that you have removed all screws from the monitor, some may be covered by rubber stoppers, pry them apart on your damaged laptop.
It may help to follow this step by step for a dell, not that it will be the same but it will give you a guideline of how to handle the parts and the precautions to take
