You have to lock down the cylinder. Remove the spark plug. Lower the piston to the bottom of the cylinder. Fill the empty cylinder by pushing clean rope or tubing into it...make sure to leave a little sticking out for removal. Raise the piston so that it smashes and locks against the rope. Take large slip=joint pliers and turn the clutch assembly counter-clockwise to remove. When reassembling, you MUST get the clutch tight. Failure to get the clutch tight will result in serious engine damage.
Good luck!

Runs fine at idle but stops when throttle is pressed

When this happens remove your muffler and check to see that the spark arrestor screen is not coked up with soot. If not remove the spark plug and with the ignition switch off pull the starter a few times. If some gas comes out of the cylinder then the carb is flooding the cylinder. In this case you have to open the carb and check the ' check valve' to see if it is seating properly or if the spring is weak. This can be done by pressing on the spring and releasing. Attach a piece of gas line to the intake and blow with your mouth. If air is escaping the valve and spring needs replacing. Another problem could be a faulty solenoid not delivering a consistent flow of electricity to the spark plug in sync with the rev of the piston.

Won't start. String pull will not go more than a few inches. Engine seized?

Try the clutch. I just fixed this problem. One of the clutch springs ate it's way though the red housing where the spring for the pull start is at. When the housing came apart the engine seized and I couldn't move the pull start. For the schematic on the engine here is the web address http://www.searspartsdirect.com. Hope this helps.

I would take it back now. You paid good money for a good machine. Don't start your experience with you having to repair it for them.

Well, I hope I've helped. If you found this information useful, please leave me some THUMBS UP if you think I'm deserving! :-) Thank you! Dane

Need info on putting line on troy bilt 4-cycle string trimmer. Need to know how to get spool off trimmer to replace trimming string on the spool.

Hold orange spool containing string while twisting the black plastic cap in the center, counterclockwise. This retaining cap is loosely spring loaded, so watch for the spring falling out. Once this locking cap is removed, the spool pulls right off.

How do i string a ryobi dual line electric trimmer. i have a dual line trimmer that use to be my dad's (he is no longer living) so i am unable to ask him.

Remove the head, the reel, a knob and a spring will fall out if you arentcareful. Cut about 25 feet of proper size line. Pull 12 or so feet throuth the little hole in the reel and wind the string in the direction indicated on the reel. Leave about 6 inches sticking out on each side. There is a notch on each side to hold the string while you reassemble it. Insert the string into these notches. Reassemble the device and trim away while recalling all sorts of wonderful memories of the times you spent with your dad.

How do you Replace string on the trimmer head spool

Take the spool off and turn it up side down take out the centre and wind the left side 6 times to the left and the right side 6 turns to the right then put the ends through the holes and refit to stud and screw on butter fly nut...
Dont try winding them both the same way as when you try to get more out 1 side will come out and the other will go inside so you will be back were you started

String stays out

You probably have to replace the rewind spring. If you are not familiar with how to do it, I would take it to a shop for repairs. If you have had your trimmer apart, then you know where things are. If you want to do it yourself, get back to me and I'll try to walk you through it. Good luck...Lee
