Question about Dell Dimension E510 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Hi - I have a Dell E510 with a 160 gig RAID drive (or 2 160 gigs together). I swapped one out for a Western Digital 500Gig drive, but now I can't get the drive to show up on my computer. And the Intel RAID program rebuilds the drive as a RAID drive, even when I've tried to stop it. Should I simply swap the other 160Gig out, or will my system not boot up if I do this?

You have to break the mirror of the raid assembly. There should be an option in the boot screen for you to control your assembly. You have to take away the raid settings in order for the HD's to stop replicating and act independantly.

Turned off raid, unable to access 2nd 160 gig hard

Right click on Computer in the Start menu. You should see manage.
click on manage and you will see some selections the left one called disk management. click that and you should see all your drives. If you disable the Raid you may have to initialize the disk for windows to use it again. right click on the drive and initialize or if it shows up you may have to create a partition and then format.

Upgrading from 250 gig hard to a 500 gig hard and says mismatch. my first hard drive is dead

hi pete,

changing the bios will do the trick, find one that is most compatible with aspire 1640 for a 500gig hd, once you have this replaced, it will work.

Computer won't detect new HDD as master when booting

You can do this!

1. Connect your 500gig drive as the slave of your smaller boot drive.
2. Go to http://freewareapp.com/western-digital-data-lifeguard-tools_download/ and get the Western Digital Lifeguard tools.
3. Run the executable to install WD tools.
4. Run that application.

You'll notice there is a Drive to Drive Copy utility. This will clone your new 500gig drive from the smaller drive. When the utility finishes copying the drive, shut down. Remove the smaller drive, and set your 500 gig drive as master/single. Reboot, and you should be running off the new drive.

It is possible that your old drive was an IDE drive and your new one is SATA. If so, you may need to enter Setup on the reboot, go to the Boot menu, and set the boot device to the new drive type.

Dell d400 problems with Western Digital 32 gig hard drive

try connecting to a differnt port if it still does the same thing change the usb cable because what i understand is there is a loose connection somewhere ... or the best thing is contact dell at 18006249896 and ask them that u want to change the internal hdd and they will tell u what maximum the system can support and which is available with them ... its their system and if u buy parts from them they have to support u and make sure they both work

Hi,

This is highly probable that the external Hard disk has failed. Not your fault , but due to manufacturing fault.

Pls return to where you have bought it, and request for warranty exchange.

Thank you for coming to FixYa and rating us.

Western Digital My Book Pro - Replace Disks

Same problem. This from WD Answer ID 1664:
Important: The user serviceable enclosure will only work with replacement hard drives from Western Digital. Inserting a non-Western Digital hard drive into the enclosure could cause damage or data loss.
So Hitachi drives will not work at all. After talking to tech support, it seems you have to have them send you a replacement disk in order for it to work.
I'm looking for a way around this since I want to upgrade my dual 500 G drives with dual 1 TB drives also. Maybe they throw something onto the boot sector that tells the MyBook controller what to do, who knows? The search goes on.

Internal hd ata

If I am right on this one the 4600 can only take a 250gig hd But I was wondering if you could partion the HD to 236.7 gigs twice so the computer only recognizes the 236.7 gig hd you will see two drives in my computer once you do just format both partitions unless you have another hd and then you will see three drives just do the ones you installed or you may loose your operating system, I don't even know if that will work, but I think it is worth a try seems you already have the 500gig drive, can't hurt to try, I sure hope this help some what.,
