i am a charter captain, and I am dependant on this unit. I waited to chat for almost an hour. My expectations are not being met. I have checked ground and power supply-both are good. Should I install a separate power shut off ?

  • robmac02 Aug 25, 2010

I have access to the Navman 4599 owners manual from which you have copied and pasted your response. All pf these issues have been checked as a matter of basic problem solving. I am looking for technical expertise, not BASIC trouble shooting, If you cannot supply the appropriate expertise, please refund my fee!

Your response is just a copy and paste of the owners/installation manual which is available online, Do you or any of your associates have direct technical expertise with this unit.

I indicated in the explanation of the problem that the electrical supply has already been tested. I'm looking for solutions, not guesses-I can do that.

Keep in mind that something wire could be loss in ths installation or ground there.

1. The fishfinder won’t turn on:
a) The FISH 4500/4600 is designed to operate on a 12/24 volt battery system, where the voltage may vary from 10 to 35 volts. If an excessive voltage is supplied, a fuse will be tripped, turning the display unit off. Check the fuse.
b) Check that the power cable connector at the back of the display unit is securely plugged in and the collar is locked in place. The collar must be secure for watertight connection.
c) Measure the battery voltage while the battery is under load - turn on some lights, radio or other electrical equipment connected to the battery. If the voltage is less than 10 volts:
- the battery terminals or wiring on the terminals may be corroded.
- the battery may not be charging correctly or may need replacing.
d) Inspect the power cable from end to end for damage such as cuts, breaks, squashed or trapped sections.
e) Ensure that the red wire is connected to the positive battery terminal and the black wire to the negative battery terminal. If wired for the Auto Power option, ensure the yellow wire is connected to the ignition circuit. Also check the boat’s main switch circuit (see section 6-5 Wiring options).
f) Check for corrosion on the power cable connector and clean or replace if required.
g) Check fuses that are placed in line with the power cable. A fuse can be blown despite appearing to be good or the fuse may be corroded. Test the fuse or replace it with a fuse known to be good.

2. The fishfinder operates erratically:
a) Check that the transducer does not have debris (e.g. weed, plastic bag) caught around it.
b) The transducer may have been damaged during launching, running aground or while underway with debris etc. If the transducer has been impacted, it may have been kicked up on the bracket. If it is not physically damaged, reset the transducer back to its original position. (see the Transom Transducer Installation Guide.)
c) When the transducer is less that 2 ft. (0.6 m) from the bottom, the depth readings may become inconsistent and erratic.
d) Manual Gain may be set too low, which may cause weak bottom echo or no fish signals. If in Manual Gain, try increasing the Gain.
e) Ensure the back of the bottom surface of the transducer is slightly lower than the front and the front is as deep in the water as possible in order to minimize the generation of bubbles through cavitation. (see the Transom Transducers Installation Guide.)
f) Check the transducer and power cable connectors at the back of the display unit are securely plugged in and the collars are locked in place. The collars must be secure for watertight connection.
g) Inspect the power cable from end to end for damage such as cuts, breaks, squashed or trapped sections.
h) Ensure there is not another fishfinder or depth sounder turned on, which may interfere with this fishfinder.
i) Electrical noise from the boat’s engine or an accessory may be interfering with the transducer(s) and/or the Navman fishfinder.

Hope helps.

Try these steps to get your Navi 4500 working correctly again

1. The fishfinder won’t turn on:

a) The FISH 4500/4600 is designed to operate

back of the display unit is securely plugged
in and the collar is locked in place. The collar
must be secure for watertight connection.

c) Measure the battery voltage while the battery
is under load - turn on some lights, radio or
other electrical equipment connected to the
battery. If the voltage is less than 10 volts:
- the battery terminals or wiring on the
terminals may be corroded.
- the battery may not be charging correctly
or may need replacing.

d) Inspect the power cable from end to end
for damage such as cuts, breaks, squashed
or trapped sections.

e) Ensure that the red wire is connected to the
positive battery terminal and the black wire
to the negative battery terminal. If wired for
the Auto Power option, ensure the yellow wire
is connected to the ignition circuit. Also check
the boat’s main switch circuit (see section 6-5
Wiring options)

f) Check for corrosion on the power cable
connector and clean or replace if required.

g) Check fuses that are placed in line with the
power cable. A fuse can be blown despite
appearing to be good or the fuse may be corroded.
Test the fuse or replace it with a fuse
known to be good.

Hello there
The code can be caused by a faulty keypad or a Stuck keypad which may mean relay is turned on. Determine if problem is with the Key Panel or Control by:
1. Pushing CLEAR/OFF pad.
2. Disconnecting Ribbon Cable from control and waiting at least 32 seconds to see if Code recurs

If code recurs, problem is in the control. Replace control.

If code does not recur, problem is with the Key Panel. :

Problem with navman 4150 fish finder

I installed my Navman 4150 depth finder along with the Navman GPS unit when I purchased my Bayliner Trophy 20Ft. Offshore model. Everything was ok for one year and it has been downhill since then. Losing signal, unbelievable high depth ranges, blank periods, etc.. I now can't even get a reading tieded up at the dock. I am now giving up and shoping for a quality unit.. Cape Disappointment.........

In my case, reinstalling didn't help at all.
In Control Panel->System->Advanced Properties->Performance, enabling DEP only for the essential windows services solved the problem.

Navman 4500 fish finder w/transom mount transducer

I finally got an email reply from Navman. If the unit is less than two years old (mine is not) they will repair it. If it is over two years old, or if you can't prove that it is less than two years old, you can ship it to them and they will repair it for the low, low price of 355 US dollars.

Pretty nice of them since it appears these units are highly problematic isn't it? I am wondering if they guarantee their fix, or just have you on the hook for another 355 dollars later.

Good Luck Everyone,

Walt
