How do I fix the grip shift ? The piece that you turn to shift gears will not click into place. It slides back to first gear.

On the top of your grip shift there will be a slot for your shifter cable to connect. there should be a bolt there as a tensioner as well as on shifter itself. these may have to be tightened because it sounds as if they are loose.

2006 HONDA CIVIC GEAR SHIFT LIGHT BULB REPLACEMENT


all you have to do is pop the little square piece around the gear shift lever up and there is a wire with a tiny bulb on it. It is a pain in the butt to get all the pieces back in place and put the square piece back down. i have had to replace mine like every 6 months. be careful not to use too much force because you can break the clips that secure it in place and that will look worse than your bulb not working

2003 trailblazer shift cable broke loose, now tranny is in nuetral but shifter is stuck in park position, thus i now am unable place end of shift cable back on because it dosent line up! please help!


Ok, here is what you do, slide under vehicle, locate shift lever on side of transmission rotate counter-clockwise two clicks, pop shifter on, hop back inside turn key on depress brake pedal and check shifter, if it falls off again replace cable assembly they do not sell individual bushings, and get cable from dealer.

My 1993 nissan sentra automatic stuck on first gear and it doesn't shift to the rest of gears. Help me please.


Your governor gear is either stripped or destroyed. It's extremely easy as far as labor, beginner skill level (if you have a knowledgeable person or book/article to reference) but finding the part is a headache. Get the part before you do anything else. It's a small plastic gear (stock) and I've heard that there's a brass one available, but haven't found it yet. From the dealership, the gear alone is about $40. The governor assembly is about $200. There's 99% chance you only need the gear. I'll give you a basic walk-through of how to check, but I would strongly advise not to proceed until you have at least the gear in-hand. Also, make sure the gear is correct.

**IMPERATIVE**
The 4-speed transmission has a 16 spline gear that is about an inch and a half long, whereas the 3-speed transmission has a 19 spline gear that is about 2.5 inches long. They are NOT interchangeable.

First, get everything out of the way. Disconnect and remove your battery. There is a small fusebox bolted to the battery tray. Remove the two nuts holding this on, and separate it from the battery tray, letting it hang behind the radiator. Remove the battery tray. The air box is going to have to come out as well, so you have room to see and work. Easiest way to do this is to remove all of the hoses as far from the airbox as possible, leaving them attached to the airbox so it all comes out as one piece. There's a small vacuum line just out-of-sight, that plugs into the silencer, feel around on the firewall side, and simply unplug it. Once all of this is safely out of the way, it's time to get down to business.

In your newly-cleared work area, on the top of the transmission closer to the firewall than to you, you'll see what looks like either a black plastic, or silver (but dirty) metal, 'cap'. There is a snap-ring set just inside the ridge around the top of this, with a seal ring under it. Pry this snap-ring out carefully, unless you intend to replace it. With that out of the way, the seal ring will come right up. Using a large vice grip, or a large pair of water pump pliers, grip the cap and work it out. There's an o-ring around the bottom of this, so it make take a little back-and-forth to get it all the way out. Once you have gotten that off, there is what looks like a complex metal block underneath. This is your governor assembly, and it's actually about 10 inches long. To reiterate, this entire assembly should be around $200 from a dealership. You should be able to pull this outwith minimal effort, and the bottom is hardened plastic, so be as gentle as possible. Once removed, inspect the plastic gear on the bottom. If it's chewed up but otherwise intact, replace it and you're okay. If it's shattered and/or obviously missing pieces (which has been the case in several of the rebuilds I've done), you'll have to drain at least a quart of fluid to see into the bottom of the hole where the governor sits, and make sure there are no pieces floating around in there. I had to use a dentist's pick to get the pieces out. If you are going to replace the entire governor assembly, remove the old one and skip the next paragraph.

If you want to save a nice chunk of money, and just replace the gear:
Put the governor in a vice, and as gently as possible, hammer the holding pin out of the gear and governor shaft. Once removed, the old gear will slide right off. Slide the new gear on, put the pin in place, and you're good to go.

Slide the new (or newly rebuilt) governor gear assembly back into the transmission, making sure it seats flush. Replace the cap you removed, the seal ring, then the snap-ring. Put the airbox back in, ensuring all of the hoses and clamps are back in place - especially that pesky one hidden behind the silencer box. Replace your battery tray, the fusebox thereto attached, and your battery and hold-down. Replace any transmission fluid you had to drain, start the car and let it run for 5-10 minutes to warm up the fluid. With your foot on the brake, manually shift it through all the gears to ensure the fluid gets into all of those little spaces. Put it back in park, turn the car off, check the fluid again, and add as needed.

when in auto shift mode you place gear selector in auto shift and as you drive you are in control of upshifting and down shifting, when you want to shift up you slide shifter to the right and to down shift you slide shifter to the left, but also know that the vehicle will up shift on its own if rps are to high and will not downshift all the way back to first, and try not to take off in higher gears that nwill burn the transmission

We have a 9.5 johnson outboard motor, it works in neutral and reverse, but when we put it in gear, it immediately pops back into neutral. How do we disassemble and fix this problem?


I would think that the problem is a worn clutch dog. Drain the gear oil from lower unit. You need to disconnect the shift linkage and pull the lower unit like you would to change the water pump. Then remove waterpump housing and waterpump base. The base will have a seal so you need to be careful and gently and evenly pry the base up until it comes off. Next you need to remove the prop and depending on the year there is a ring screw around the prop shaft that needs removed. Also there is a phillips screw that needs to be removed near the lower gear oil drain plug. That screw holds the shift cradle in place. From here you should be able to slide the drive shaft up and out and the prop shaft should slide out. The clutch dog is the smaller piece in between the two gears that engages fwd and rev. You really should have a mechanic do the work but if you get a book it will help you. Pay very close attention how it comes apart and make sure that you dont mix up the fwd gear with the rev. gear.

Often when you have problems with shifting, you have worn out your fluid and all the internals of the transmission, (clutches and friction plates,)will wear out on the old burnt fluid. When you replace the fluid, and or filter, you often make the situation worse because the new fluid has nothing to grab onto. The clutches and plates inside your trans are worn out.

So yes, It is time that you get a new/used/rebuilt trans

300Zx will not shift out of 5th gear


Dear javatrader: There are very few solutions to this problem. The fact that you had mentioned 5th & Reverse, tells me that you problem is has two possibilities. Both relate to the same component.
The shift fork for Fifth gear and reverse are the same as well as the hub which the fork fits over.
When you Move the stick shift, it moves one of 3 rails in the transmission of which one is 5th and reverse. The hub is what locks the transmission in gear. The gears are what are referred to as synchromesh. This means that when you shift from gear to gear, it makes it possible to easily make the transition without the gears grinding while the car is in motion. The synchros are in fact, kind of a "BRAKE" for the gears so that when you go to shift into that gear, the synchronizing ring, slows the gear down enough to match the speed of the counter gear allowing it to engage with it, without grinding. As the hub slides into gear, there are spring loaded "KEYS" which are small pieces of steel about 1/2 inch long, 1/4 inch thick and 1/4 inch wide with a little hump in them to push up into a small cavity machined into the hub when it slides over it, thus locking the gear into place until you pull the stick to move it out of place. If a key pops out, it could cause the gear to stick, not allowing you to pull the hub back because the key has popped out at an angle which prohibits the hub from sliding over it.
Another possible senario: The fork is secured to the shift rail with a part called a "Roll pin". If this part shears, the car will be stick in what ever gear it was in at the time the pin sheared. If the pin shears, the stick will still move out of 5th gear position but the transmission won't.
This problem, unfortunately is not one a layman can fix. This is best left to a professional.

Corolla: How do I replace the bulb under the gear shift console?


It's most likely the 12v 1.7w bulb located underneath the "prnd21" To get there: remove the the console piece just surrounding the black shift area piece- there are six tabs to undo, using a thin screwdriver(a piece of tape may help to not scratch the area) carefully pry and lift out that piece. Now, you'll see 4 clips(2 on left, 2 on right) on the black plastic shift piece, carefully unsnap these and lift up this piece. The bulb slides in and out, it DOES NOT twist. I used a needle nose pliers and a piece of one of those "jar openers" you get from real estate people(advertising..) There's not much room to get in there and get a grip on the bulb, but you can do it.
