I had the same problem with my vacuum. I called in for technical service and was told to push the "reset button". It turns out that there is a small red button right next to the dirt indicator light. I pushed the button, plugged the vacuum back in and started it up and it worked like a charm! :) Hope this helps!

SOURCE: My Oreck XL has quit sucking. The brush turns but

Same problem here with XL9100. Bag would not expand implying no suction. Motor ran and brushes turned. Easy disassembly using common tools found that a plastic bag had been sucked up and caused a blockage prior to the impeller. Cleaned up, reassembled, and everything worked fine after that.

The Dyson can be taken apart fairly easily if you are handy with tools or not. Check Utube for "Dyson repair" or even "changing a belt". There are dozens of videos and it will show you how to get into the unit. Once in there you extract the objects that have taken up residence in there!

How to remove a sock stuck in the line or brushes

As soon as you know its happened, stop the unit as the engine may burn out however, in our case we tipped it around, put a coat hanger into various holes on the left of the unit, into the brushes, all done gently and eventually the sock got sucked into the basket. It took some patience but it worked and we just finished the job. Lesson learned, pick up obscure items before you start. This could have been a disaster!! Thanks for the advise and encouragement! Dyson I sucked a towel up by mistake an it started smoking an burning smell turned off power what damage will I av caused

As a general rule when you pick up a sock or towel or anything laying on the floor that is too big for the vac to handle, it generally stops the brush roll, which in turn stops the belt and that in turn makes the belt burn in two in about 20 seconds, if you don't catch it in time. Now on most vacuums this isn't a major repair. Most folks, with a modicum of mechanical knowledge can change a belt on about 90% of the upright vac's around, but the Dyson's aren't in that 90%, they're in the ten % that make it incredibly difficult to change a simple belt. You'll need to take it to your friendly neighborhood vac repair shop and have them put on a new belt, depending on which belt that broke. Have them give you an estimate first. You may be surprised at what it costs to have a belt changed, if it's the one that's on the clutch assembly.

Model 16n5 has no suction

check the passages for obstructions. (coat hanger works nicely). if the motor is running, you should have suction. if you don't, something is blocking air flow.

My oreck vacuum has stopped sucking up things.

It won't turn the brush because the belt is stretched or broke from the heat of sucking something too big up. If you have your service manual it should show you the location of the belt covers to replace it.

I just bought a new belt for my vacuum and have a brand new bag in and it isn't sucking anything up.

1 - make sure that the belt is installed properly and brush roll is spinning as you are vacuuming.
2 - it is not unusual to have a clog in the miniemptor / fill tube assembly - black plastic shoe-like bag bottom part with tube (you can see it HERE)
3 - Sometimes something gets caught in in the exhhaust - part of the main body where you install the bag. Take coat hanger and run through it. Once I have pulled a sock out of there and I could nor see or reach it without the wire...

Lint from the carpet not being picked up, why?

Either the brush roll is not turning, or you have a clog at the inlet by the brush roll or in the hose.

My dirt devil vacuum won't suck up anything and its brand new!!

Take the vac bag off and turn on the vac , it should blow air out, if not unclogg the hose where the bag connects, also when you check the roller and belt, unclog the flex hose(located inside base near roller assembly) that sucks up the dirt. As long as the motor works fine the rest is just maint.
