Question about Jenn-Air JED8430 Electric Cooktop

1 Answer

The left side of my cooktop shorted out. Initially popping sound and electrical burning smell. Now shorted out with loud popping sounds and large flash of red under the cooktop. Did not start a fire but had to shut off at circuit breaker since it remained "on" with knob to the off setting. Surprised this did not knock out the circuit breaker - should it have? Also, is this possible or safe to repair. Repairman is scheduled to come in two days to check it out. Not sure if I should waste the money on the service call.

What you had was a slow short - practically the same thing as in a welder: big and loud flame, localized and the amperage isn't that great. As such it's very possible that the breaker wasn't tripped, especially if you had a big one, over 30Amps.
No, you shouldn't even try to repair it, that unit is dead as a dodo.

Electric shock from cooktop, didn't trip breaker,

Where did you smell the smell was it from the fan switch. turn the power off and take the screw out of where the fan switch is and check the wires to the switch and the switch itself. sometimes the jennair cooktops have issues with that switch. let me know how it goes

I was roasting a chicken in my Maytag Cooktop when I heard a loud buzzing and a "pop", all of the power in my house went out. Something had tripped the breaker. My husband reset the breaker but my stove...

there is a short for sure, sometimes when the heating element burns out and melts, it touches the metal inside the housing causing a short. inspect the heating elements in the oven(top and bottom). the loud buzzing sound is what a shorting out heating element makes as it melts like a weldin rod, usually because of using tin foil(not recommended)

Thermador gas cooktop explosion

I would say that pop was one of you igniters.  either that or the stove is not installed correctly and when it gets warm, thermal expansion makes the metal pop.  I would say that I would use caution and discontinue its use.  Most problems with these need to fixed professionally.

first, disable power to cooktop. next, replace either the mangled burner or the entire unit (after initial inspection leads to a logical prognosis)...sorry.
