This solution worked for me. I have 64-bit version of Vista. If you have 64-bit version of Vista this is the only thing that I have found to work.

What I did was used a different scanners driver for my Memorex 6142u. I used the Hamrick version of the Canon N1220U scanner driver. The best way to do this is to plug the USB cord into the computer. Vista will try and find the driver for you and fail. then go to device manager. It will say that it isn't working properly. Then fix the driver by selecting from the list of drivers that Vista has packaged with it.

Download/save application file 6142. Check file properties, under compatibility select "run this program..." and choose Windows XP(Service Pack 2). if u do not have a vista option
Then run the program.

According to Canon, the CanoScan N650u/N656U is not compatible with Windows Vista.  They have not released a compatible driver.  You could attempt to use a different driver, but that causes the system to become unstable and crash often, if it works at all.  I recommend upgrading to a Vista-compatible scanner.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer has not released a driver for that scanner to work with Vista. That scanner will only work with Windows XP / 2000 / Me / 98SE.
