Since my last post, I have rectified the problem.....

1) I opened the unit to find a seagate HDD
2) I downloaded the Seatools in dos format and burned the image on to a cd rom
3)Taking out the HDD from my recorder,I hooked it up to another pc and ran the seatools disk @ bootup.
I tried for 2 hrs to repair the bloody thing ( 160 gb!) so i gave up and tried to erase the full HDD...which worked.
4) on my laptop i navigated to Pioneers site and found my recorder along with instructions and a zip file that contained 2 files.
5)After reading the destructions erm i mean instructions ;) I put the HDD back into the recorder and followed the instructions again..

Crossing my fingers i turned the recorder back on and to my amazement i was able to have more functionality..BUT... it says my HDD name error so I ran the disk again and wallah! all worked XDDDD

This error e26 gets thrown up on some digital rights management programs.this really just means you are not allowed to record...ever increasingly thanks to the big corps like sony drm carrier signals are put into some broadcasts to overcome copying infringements.there still is a way to do this with the right equipment.some tv channels get revenue from their advert counts so they put these signals in to ensure that you can only watch at broadcast or catchup on certain devices.what I can't figure out is I can record anything whilst it's being aired and still transfer to older equipment but not anything with latest ios and certainly not with sony recorders.

Hello,

You put out some very intresting facts I am about to say here. You have a unit that hangs or freezes this is most likely a Capacitor inside the unit that is leaking or buldgeing. If the unit is under a warranty I would encourge you bring it in for repairs but if its not pop the cover open look and examine the capacitors.

Capacitors are little round looking cans, examine the top and sides if it looks puffed up it needs to be replaced. I would look at that first before ruling anything else out.

Thanks for using fixy I hope this does help in your Voting and rating proccess.

Sony dvd recorder as hdd error

try replacing the red sata cable which runs from the HDD under the DVD drive to the main board on the right-hand side. these are a common problem on these models, there cheap and unreliable. you can purchase a better quality cable from a computer store for little money. HDD ERROR is'nt necessery an HDD fault as i found out with my rdr-hx525. if however the HDD is faulty and you buy a replacement, once installed you will need to pair the new HDD with the unit by entering the service mode by unplugging the AC then while holding down open/close and play together then re-insert the AC lead while still holding open/close and play and wait until you see an "S" in the display then let go and the service mode will appear on the tv screen. go to no.9 HDD mode, press enter then go to no.3 Write ID then it will say "execute write ID?" yes and press enter and then it will say "writing HDD serial ID.... OK" once this is done, exit the service mode by keeping your finger on the power button for approx 10secs. your DVD recorder should now recognise the new HDD. if you don't follow this process, you will still have an HDD error message as your DVD recorder will have your old HDD installed and won't recognise your new one. given the amount of time since you posted this fault, you may still have the unit in question in which case i hope this solution is helpful, or for anyone else with the same problem.

power up your dvd then you you disconnect from the power cord.wait a few mins like 5 mins then you plug it in back and power it up if that does not corect your problem.the strip that leads to your dvd lens needs to be changed.or the micro chip that controls the hd needs to be changed.however take it to a tech.
