Have you tried plugging it in another computer? If it worked, then the USB port on your computer (the one the scandisc was plugged into) is burned. If it doesn't work in the other computer, then the USB drive's chipset is burned ... unfortunately, data recovery is very difficult, but there are specialized companies that do this.

I have a problem with my HDD. The drive (WD External HDD 1TB) was working fine as of yesterday. Today when I reconnected the external drive to my laptop, it powers up but isnt showing in "My...

From your description it appears that your drive is failing, possibly due to bad sectors. You can check if there are problems with the drive using the free trial version of http://www.hdtune.com/

If it checks out ok then you can try to recover your lost partition with Testdisk its free http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Or if you need data recovery help this a good choice for low cost and fast data recovery. All data recovery work is performed by an experienced tech remotely over the Internet from a boot cd that you download and the best part is they just ask for donations: http://FreeDataRecovery.us

I have one 1TB Freeagent hard drive and it was working just fine, until one day it just disappears from my pc and i cant get it to work.I plugged the power cord off, waited for a few seconds, plugged it back...

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check. Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer too then your harddrive has internal issue.

S.m.a.r.t. says my hard drive is bad and needs repair

IF you can still boot, backup as much data as you can.
If you cant boot from it, you need to replace the hard drive, you can then either connect the damaged HD as a second drive and save your data, or fit it in an enclosure or docking station.
Once you have saved your data, you can reformat the drive, run scandisc to attempt a repair it, you may then be able to use it as a spare/second drive.
I have had a few drives fail as system/bootable drives, but have been perfectly ok to use as a second data disc

I can't get my Simple tech mini 250GB to work Please Help!

Basically external usb drives are all the same. They have a usb interface and a drive interface. What happens is the usb interface usually dies after a while. The hard drive and your data are perfectly fine but you can't get at it.

There a re a few ways to fix this. One you can send to a data recovery center and spend $500 plus to get your data. You can sometimes send it in to the manufactuer but they don;t garrentee anything. Or you can buy a new external USB drive enclosure and put the drive out of yours into the new enclosure.

The drive inside is a standard laptop or small format harddrive. Absolutely nothing special about them. The hardest part of this is actually figuring out how to get the original enclosure apart. Once you get it open (or the tech does) then you just unplug the power and dat and remove any mount screws (maybe 4) and then revrese all of that into the new enclosure. Plug it in and you will have your data back. Thats all there is to it.

There are a couple of things to watch for. One is you may need a drive adapter dpending on what size or format of hard drive is in there. These are just a $3 cable adapter. The other thing is the odd enclosure formats or acesses the drive a differant way. If this is the case then waht you will need to do is get the same type of enclosure and move the drive. This is a bit more annoying and expensive but still cheaper than the data retrieval service by far. Even worse case you should be under $200, if its a normal usb setup then can be $20 plus labour.

Anyway don't panic your data should be fine.

1tb Western Digital hard drive stopped working suddenly, no light

If the hard drive does not even turn on, then check its power supply. Maybe the power supply went bad; it should be a standard 12V 3.5A power supply.

Even if the power supply is working, chances are good that your data are still there, because the unit not turning on means that the internal enclosure, not the disk electronics, got messed up. It's unlikely that BOTH enclosure electronics AND disk electronics went south together, unless you got a lightning strike at short distance (less than 60 feet, say). You'll need to open the enclosure, extract the drive and connect it to another compatible enclosure (most USB/eSATA enclosures with the same EIDE or SATA connector as your WD will do) in order to override the fritzed enclosure electronics and connect directly to the hard disk. Once you do, your data will be there. If the disk crashed last time it turned on, maybe you'll need to run disk checker and expect to lose a file or two.

On the other hand, if the drive does turn on when powered, and the PC "just" doesn't see it, chances are proportionately bad for your data: you'll need to send the disk to a data recovery service, which can be quite costly.
