Please follow these steps to get the problem fixed:
1. change the paper type (in printer options) from plain to "photo".
2. Take out the printer head by pushing in on tab in front, lift up holder and remove head. I soaked it in rubbing alcohol--just enough to cover screens, about 5 min. Rinse with water till clear, dry and reinstall it and try after that it should work.
3. un a printer self-test(review manual) and check results. If no black output, its a printer problem. In most cases, inspect the innards for any possible massive leaks or clogs.
4. Make sure there is nothing covering the jets on the cartridge. Also how long has it been laying around? it might have dried out, and/or expired. On new printers the cartridges have expirations and it will not use them after a certain amount of time. Also try a printer self cleaning.
5. Do a complet printer clean up. The above mentioned steps should help.
The drivers seem to have got corrupted. Please un and re install the drivers as per the link below:

Drivers uninstalled, reboot new driver installed - no joy.
Running Vista on Dell Inspiron 530S -all else appears AOK
The newly installed driver installed is 6.0.6000 6/21/2006
System insists this is correct driver. I have been to Canon site and DL driver pkg there. 2006 seems old for Vista here in 2010.
Colors AOK no grid pattern at ll on test print.
Cables are connected directly between computer and printer. Previous connection was via USB hub - AOK then until the black stopped. Latest attempts at fix done with cable directly into USB port.
Any further ideas???
