Question about Freezers

2 Answers

I have a Whirlpool upright freezer and live in France, the door has come away at the bottom on the hinge side. I understand the door can be reversed but the pin and covering plastic piece has been lost, is it possible to replace this.

I appreciate your swift reply. I will go on searching for a pin and I am happy that it is worth trying to fix it. Thanks.

Yes. Hinges are sold as replacement parts, and for a given brand there aren't that many different ones used. Replacing the plastic cover might be a bit harder, but maybe that's not essential to you. You haven't given me enough info to find the exact part for you, but here is a link to a web site with very good search tools that I often use. The link will take you within this site where I have narrowed the search a bit for you. The prices on this site tend to be a bit high, so I often find the part number then order elsewhere. Don't be misled by the chest-freezer picture you will see at this link.

Hi, you can do without the covering plastic but cannot reverse the freezer door without the pin which is very important in this process. You have to search for the pin....

HOW DO YOU GET THE DOOR OFF?

There is usually a plastic part covering the top hinge. It will pull or snap off, rarely there might be a small screw.

Remove that plastic covering, and then unbolt the part of the hinge assembly attached to the body of the freezer.. DO THIS WHILE THE DOOR IS CLOSED! That is so the magnetic seal around the door will tend to hold it in place. Lean against it as you remove the hinge part so the door does not fall away and land on you, or even worse: break the door!

Slowly lift the door out of the bottom hinge, and carefully set it somewhere safe.

Be VERY CAREFUL when you set the door down. If you set it upright, against a wall or something, be aware that there is a pin sticking out the bottom of that door hinge, and it will likely simply ruin any flooring you set it on - and I speak that as a "voice of experience"!

Have fun!

Frigidaire upright freezer door will not seal

Hi Chris, this is AP! Thank you for your post.

I understand you are having trouble with the door sealing on your upright freezer. Many times this can be caused by the freezer not being leveled. If the freezer is not leveled during installation, the door may be misaligned and not close or seal properly, causing cooling, frost, or moisture problems. To level your upright freezer use a carpenter's level to level the freezer from front-to-back. Adjust the plastic leveling feet in front, 1/2 bubble higher, so that the door closes easily when left halfway open. I hope this information has been helpful.

I have a kenmore upright freezer model 970-254326 bought in 2011 from sears. The door opens left to right but in my tiny apartment I NEED it to open from right to left just to put things in and get th

You should see some plastic plugs or holes for mounting bolts on the opposite side of the freezer case. The latch mechanism should adapt from one side to another.
You would remove the top hinge and then lift the door off of the bottom hinge. Then you would remove the bottom hinge and switch it to the other side. Place the door onto the bottom hinge and then install the top hinge on the other corner of the case to match.
You should be able to move the handle from one side to the other. The magnets in the doorseal should work as before to keep the door closed. The interior light is usually centered on the bottom to aid in reversing the door opening.

Alarm

The alarm usually is telling you that the temperature inside the freezer is not low enough. Check the door seals with dollar bill. Shut the door on the bill and try to move it. Try all around the door. The bill should resist being pulled out. If you can't pull it out the door is too tight. If it comes out easily you have an air leak. you can adjust a freezer door by loosening the hinges, pushing the door into place and re-tightening the hinge.

Re: danby upright freezer 20.1 cubic ft., model #

The lower hinge on each door may have a door closing cam. It raises the door up ¼ inch when opening and this assist in closing the door. If it’s wore out and doesn’t work the door may not seal and the gasket can be damaged. Watch the operation of the door to see if it rises up when opened.

Leave the door shut and let the magnetic gasket hold the door in place. Put something between the bottom of the door and the floor to hold it in case it slips.
Remove the bracket holding the pin and hinge assembly taking note of order of removal of parts. Slide new cams on. You probably need two.
