Question about Optics

1 Answer

I purchased a Tasco Starguide 114 with Mission Control about 10 years ago from a upplier going out of business. I have never used it but am now interested in doing so. My problem is that I lost the instruction manual. I have no idea how to set up the telescope or how to use the Astro tracker. In the manual were also coordinates for hundreds of stars and galaxys. Is there somewhere I could buy or download a manual?

I found this comment on Amazon.com-

"Hello Amateur Astronomers,
Purchased the little Gem at Service Merchandise in Illinois, back in Feb, 02. What I did not like about this Go To scope was Star Guide hand control and that chinsy battery pack. (watch the frail wires, they break off the terminals.)
First, the Star Guide hand controller is very complicated to figure out. For example, when first turned on it reads "custom"
What is custom? Custom means the kind of scope. The instructional manual then reads if your telescope doesn't function properly, then go to the menu (#3) and scroll down to the correct model. Listing custom again and 3 other choices. Oh, those many addendums! One addendum to the manual advises you just skip everything and be sure to use "auto align" citing a two star alignment. Another addendum then reads it it not advisable to use this method since you have to know the stars names and location. Well, guys, what other method is there?
Be careful, though, the little battery pack that powers the 114 is not built into the scope. I don't know how many times my scope wrapped the rubber coated wire around the tripod and into the mount. My advise is to velcro the Vinyl covered pack to the fork mount, and get the wires (which are black) out of the way.
Another gripe I had was switching observing locations. Finding stars at the first location, the scope functioned properly, however, for some reason, it didn't like Dansforth Illinois. Even though I picked kankankee as the nearest city, it just wouldn't point to anything, not even Venus. I suspect someone forgot to program other terrestial locations in the hand controllers database. So my advise is to load the proper latitude and longitute into the controller if you're going to switch observing sites. Oh, and those poor blotes in Ohio, well Ohio, and all its cities, are listed under the State of South Dakota? Also Tasco is not honoring its warranties, since, as I understand it is going under."

Sadly there are no manuals for this long ago discontinued telescope.

Here is the main Tasco web site. Maybe you can contact them and find something out????

I recently purchased a Tasco Starguide telescope. Aparently the eye piece it came with does not even belong to the telescope. Will the eye piece to this particular telescope even be available for...

Telescope eyepieces are interchangeable. Most scopes come with two or three, of different focal lengths (to give different magnifications), and enthusiasts frequently buy others, either to get a wider range of focal lengths or to get better quality.

I do not know what you mean by "does not even belong to the telescope". Most eyepieces are a standard size, with a barrel of 1.25 inches outside diameter. If your eyepiece mount is that size, you can use any make of eyepiece that fits. The Tasco brand name is not associated with high quality eyepieces, so if the one you have is another make then that is not a problem in itself.

You can find many eyepieces for sale on Amazon or eBay by searching for "eyepiece 1.25". You may want to familiarise yourself with eyepiece issues by visiting THIS SITE, which has useful basic information.

How do i update my starguide 114 as it is having problems just finding the moon

Doubtful it will EXACTLY find the moon or the planets as their orbits are "calculated" and always have some error--

You must be very precise when you are aligning the telescope.

I have a solution!
Tasco Starguide ST-60700CT is virtually identical to NexStar 60 GT and the NexStar manual can be downloaded from
