Our Lion's Club has a Model 49D popper which does not stir well after 3rd bathch -- also pan catch seems worn out about the same time -- is it possible to get parts for this machine or perhaps a replacement upper unit complete? Only used perhaps for approximately 1000 bags per year

Hello. Your machine is a bit of a collectors' item. Could not lovate a manual or parts but here is some info you may find helpful
The usual way to use a pop corn popper is to:
1st - add oil
2nd - add popcorn
3rd - add any seasoning (if using the pre-packaged "theater" popcorn mix).

DO NOT add butter into the popper, as it will burn quickly and make for some foul tasting pop corn.

You can always add butter and salt to taste AFTER the pop corn is done popping.

Rather than searching for parts or an upper unit, consider charging a quarter a bag toward the purchase of a new or reconditioned machine. J.

Popcorn popper isn't popping popcorn

If it heats up, your popcorn may be old and dried out. If it doesn't heat up and the stirring rod does not turn, check your power cord for defects. Procedure: plug in the popper (check both ends of the cord!), turn it on, and gently wiggle the cord right at the plug or where it goes into the popper, and watch the stirring rod to see if it moves. If it starts and stops as you wiggle the cord, you've found the break in the cord. Repair it or replace it (West Bend lists it online for $5) and be more careful with the cord in the future (never unplug by yanking on the wire, always pull on the plug itself).

If the stirring rod turns and there is no heat, the thermostat or thermal fuse is probably open. This can happen in some poppers if the air vents are blocked on the bottom. Remove the obstruction from the vents, let everything cool off, and try again. If it does not heat up from a cold start, there may be a blown thermal fuse inside. If you decide to replace the thermal fuse or thermostat, it MUST have the same temperature and current rating as the original.

Do you need to add anything to the popcorn machine

Depends on your machine. What bran/model dso you have? If it is an air popper, NO. Adding anything will damage the machine.

If your machine is not an air popper then you likely need to add some oil. I currently have a WestBend Stir Crazy Popcorn Popper. You use a tablespoon of oil for each 1/4 cup of popcorn in the bottom of the popper. See here; an instruction manual is available.

You are best to check with the manufacturer of your popccorn popper.

I purchased the stir crazy model 82306 and it does not pop the corn properly. Less than half of it pops. I have never had this problem with other West Bend stir crazy poppers in the past. On 4 separate...

I have one of these poppers and have been impressed with the minimal number of unpopped kernels.

On only one occassion have I not been satisfied and suspect it was due to insufficient oil being added.

Make sure you are adding sufficient oil to aid heat transfer to the kernels.

6 cup stir crazy popcorn popper lid

There are lids around your house that will fit this. Try a butter or sour cream lid.
