    Dear Sir
I can tell you that the cartridges are new Kodak ones and fitted correctly. Further I find from my reciept
that this printer was purchased on 9th August 2009 thus surely it should not have this sort of problem this early.I feel disinclined to dismantle it
From comments I read on your web site that encourages comments also from users on suppliers
sites that this question of 'printhead missing' is a problem with Kodak printers.
    Comments please
    Richard Nelson

  • rchrdnelson Aug 25, 2010

The cartridges are new KODAK. As this printer was purchased on11th August 2009 and only 2 weeks out of warranty, I do not consider this to be of merchantable quality, and as such, I would expect a replacement printer, particulaly as you say this is a KODAK problem.
Before this problem of 'printhead missing' photographs started printing in blue and pink only. I ran all maintenance checks, but this only partly solved the problem. I installed brand new KODAK cartridges
and this cured the problem but only for one photograph. after which the 'printhead missing' error appeared, and I have told you the steps taken from then.
Please let me know how this is to be resolved. I do have the receipt if you need to see it.

This error appears because the processor of the printer cannot communicate with the printer head. Since the reinstalling of the head didn't help then the problem is in either the heads from the cartridges (replace them with original Kodak ones) or in the printer itself. If the problem is in the printer then you must dismantle it to access the carriage and it's connect cable - if the cable is intact and firmly plugged in then the defect is in the processor. This is unfixable, time for a new printer.

If the cartridges are new original ones then the mainboard's processor is at fault - an known problem in Kodak printers from the last 2 years. This is unfixable. Sorry, time for a new one.

  • Azrael SRL Aug 25, 2010

This is the problem here: the printheads on this printer are located in the cartridge; the printhead communicates with the processor thru some contacts on the cartridge carrier; these contacts are joined by a flexible data ribbon to the mainboard; most likely the contacts have failed and the mainboard has lost connection with the board.
They are unfixable and the only thing you can do is to clean them with water and a lint free rag . If this doesn't fix your problem then the printer is dead. The problem is well known on Lexmark and
Kodak printers (same manufacturer for both). You have no chance for a replacement printer, this is considered a normal wear failure.
Just cut your losses, junk it and buy a new one.

If your product has a removable printhead and uses 564, 364, 178, 862, or 920 cartridges, you have come to the right troubleshooting document.

Issue
An \'Ink System Failure\' or \'0x... \' error message displays on the printer control panel. The exact text of these error messages varies by printer, but they are usually preceded by the word \'Error .\'

The steps to resolve this issue depend on the error code that displays on the product control panel with the \'Ink System Failure\' message. Look for the section below that addresses your particular issue, and then review the solutions in that section.

Click the plus sign () for more information.

Follow these steps to resolve the issue of \'Ink System Failure\' with an accompanying error code \'0xC19A0003.\'

Solution one: Reset the printer

The error message might disappear after you turn off the printer and then turn it on again. After you make any adjustments to the cartridges or the printhead, reset the printer in order for the error message to clear completely. Follow these steps to reset the printer.

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

  2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.

  • If the error message disappears, the issue is resolved and you do not need to troubleshoot further.

  • If the error message persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Remove, clean, and reinstall the printhead

If the previous solutions did not resolve the problem, the printhead might be installed incorrectly, or there might be ink or debris on the printhead electrical contacts. Follow these steps to check and clean the printhead.

Step one: Remove the printhead

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

  2. Open the cartridge access door.

  3. To remove each cartridge, press the tab on the front of the cartridge to release it and remove it from the slot.

NOTE: Do not leave the cartridges outside the product longer than 30 minutes. Doing so can result in damage to both the product and the cartridges.

  4. Lift the latch handle on the carriage until it stops.

Figure 2: Lift the latch handle

  5. Lift the printhead straight up to remove it.

    Figure 3: Remove the printhead

Step two: Clean the printhead
There are three areas of the printhead that need to be cleaned: the plastic ramps on both sides of the ink nozzles, the edge between the ink nozzles and the electrical contacts, and the electrical contacts. Follow these steps to clean the printhead.

Figure 4: Three areas to clean

1 - Plastic ramp on the side of the ink nozzles

2 - The edge between the ink nozzles and the electrical contacts

3 - The electrical contacts

CAUTION:Do not touch the ink nozzles. Do not touch the electrical contacts with your finger. Use only cleaning materials to touch the electrical contact areas.
Figure 5: Do not touch the electrical contacts

  1. Gather the following cleaning materials:

    • Several clean, lint-free cloths or papers. Coffee filters and glass-cleaning cloths work well.

  2. Distilled or bottled water. Do not use tap water, because it can contain contaminants that can damage the printhead.

  • Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth.

  • Use the damp cloth to wipe the electrical contacts from the bottom to the top. Do not go past the edge between the electrical contacts and the ink nozzles. Repeat this motion until no ink remains on the electrical contacts.

Figure 6: Clean the electrical contacts

  • Use a fresh, lightly dampened, lint-free cloth to wipe any accumulated ink and debris from the edge between the ink nozzles and the electrical contacts.

  • Use a fresh, lightly dampened, lint-free cloth to wipe the plastic ramps on both sides of the ink nozzles. Wipe away from the nozzles only.

    Figure 8: Clean the ramps

  • Dry the previously cleaned areas with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth before proceeding to the next step.

  • Lightly dampen a fresh, clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water.

  • Clean the electrical contacts inside the product by wiping them from top to bottom. Repeat this motion until no ink remains on the electrical contacts.

  • Dry the area with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth.

  • Step three: Reinstall the printhead

    1. Raise the latch handle, and then reinsert the printhead.

      Figure 10: Insert the printhead

    2. Carefully lower the latch handle before reinserting the cartridges.

NOTE:Leaving the latch handle raised can result in incorrectly seated cartridges and printing issues. The latch must remain down to install the cartridges correctly.

Figure 11: Lower the latch handle

    3. Using the colored shaped icons for help, slide the cartridges into their appropriate slots until they snap firmly into place in the slot.

Figure 12: Slide the cartridge into the slot

Figure 13: Snap the cartridge into place

  • Close the cartridge access door.

    • If the error message disappears, the issue is resolved and you do not need to troubleshoot further.

    • If the error message persists, continue to the next solution.

    Solution three: Reset the product

    Solution four: Replace the printhead

If the previous solutions did not resolve the issue, replace the printhead. Contact HP support to obtain a replacement printhead.

Click Contact HP ( ) on this page for more support options.

If HP replaces your printhead assembly under warranty, you will receive a new printhead assembly, cleaning materials, and a full set of new cartridges.

If your printhead assembly is no longer under warranty, you can purchase a new one online.

    1. Click this link to go to the HP Parts store.

    2. Under Find your part(s) , type one of the part numbers below in the Search by part number text box.

Printer will not recognize the new cartridge installed.

    Solution
Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the issue.
NOTE: If error messages also display on the computer, clear the error messages after each of the following steps. You might have to delete pending print jobs from the print queue on the computer to clear the error messages.

Step one: Perform a power reset
Follow these steps to reset the product. Make sure you connect the product directly to a wall outlet and not a surge protector or power strip.

Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
NOTE: The product might not turn off after pressing the Power button. Continue to the next step regardless.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
    Wait 30 seconds.
Replug the power cord into the electrical outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
If these steps resolved the issue , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists , see the next step.
Step two: Clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the product
The ink nozzles on the printheads might clog if you expose them to air for more than a few minutes. The ink nozzles also might clog if you do not use the product for long periods of time. Follow these steps to clean the electrical contacts on the printheads.
CAUTION: Follow these steps carefully to avoid damaging the sensitive electrical components.
Make sure that the product is turned on.
Open the top cover of the product.
Press and hold the OK button for five seconds. The carriage moves to the left side of the product. Release the OK button.
Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
Unplug the product power cord from the electrical outlet.
NOTE: Do not turn the product off by pressing the Power button ( ). This causes the carriage to move out of reach.
    Lift the printhead latch.

Lift the handle on the printhead that the error message indicates is missing or damaged, and then pull the printhead out of its slot.

Use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth to remove any ink from the electrical contacts on the printhead.
CAUTION: Wipe only the electrical contacts. Wiping the ink nozzles, located on the underside of the printhead, can damage the printhead.Do not touch the nozzles. Doing so permanently damages the ink nozzles, and the ink stains clothing.
Figure 3: Electrical contacts and ink nozzles

    1 - Electrical contacts
    2 - Ink nozzles
Wipe the electrical contacts with the swab until no ink residue remains.
Wipe the electrical contacts with a fresh cloth to dry them and remove lint.
After the electrical contacts on the printhead are clean and dry, place the printhead on a sheet of paper or a paper towel. Make sure that the ink nozzles face up and do not touch the paper.
    1. Use a fresh, dry, soft, lint-free cloth to clean the electrical contacts inside the product. Figure 4: Clean the electrical contacts inside the product
    2. Allow at least five minutes for the contacts to dry. Check the contacts for lint or debris, and then dry or clean the contacts again if needed.
    3. Plug the product power cord into the electrical outlet.
    4. Press the Power button ) to turn on the product. 'Printhead missing or damaged, replace the printhead' displays on the control panel.
    5. Insert the printhead into its color-coded slot. Press down firmly on the printhead to make sure the electrical contacts touch.
    6. Pull the printhead latch all the way forward, and then press down to engage the latch. If the error message indicates that both printheads are missing or damaged, repeat the steps in this procedure to clean the other printhead.
    7. Close the top cover of the product. The product restarts and then prints an alignment page.

Error message: Printhead missing, not installed correctly or has come loose

In regards to the error message with the printhead missing or come loose......I had that issue just shortly after I installed my printer. I was going crazy trying to fix it taking it out and reinstalling which was a pain, removing the cartridges and then the printhead to no avail. Finally I got smart and disconnected the power cord from the printer itself, not directly from the outlet. Once I did that and turned the printer back on the error was gone. It might have been a fluke, but it worked for me, so you might want to try it.

    Fatal printer error

    1. First open the top of the unit remove the ink tanks and set them aside.
    2. Remove the printhead and then unplug the printer. re-insert the printhead back into the printer. Remove it again and re-insert it. Do this 3-5 times. If you need help doing this, there are instructions on installing a printhead in the electronic manual PDF file provided by Kodak. (What this removal and re-install is doing is scraping of anything that might be disrupting the contact between the printhead and the printer)
    3. Now install the printhead and install the ink tanks.
    4. Plug in the printer want for it to bootup.
    5. If the error comes up again you need to contact to Kodak about getting a new printhead or Return your printer and exchange if for a new one.

Also do be sure to update your software and printer firmware through the Kodak site or through the software provided. These printers print nice photos and the ink is cheep. Dont let this road bump turn you away from them.

Kodak and or I am not responsible for any data loss or any damage to any equipment that occurs as a direct or indirect result of following the procedures described above.
