Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

Open Question

Circa 1998 Kenmore Side by Side 596.58647890 . I noticed "sweating" on frozen foodstuffs; by morning the fridge side temp was rising (nothing felt really cold). Compressor (Brazil made) running hot, fan is working; freezer and fridge temps fluctuate (works properly for extended time, then gets warm on both sides) . If I aim an additional fan directly at compressor, compressor cools down to reasonable temp (to the touch); removing external fan causes compressor to eventually heat up. Compressor is not noisy. Coils have been cleaned completely, although they were pretty dirty. Suggestions? Serviceman said he could diagnose only if unit was acting up; it wasn't when he came. Trash it or repair it?

SOURCE: Freezer works Refrigerator will not cool down

The compressor should be OK this time because you caught it in time. But if the condenser fan stops you need to consider replacing the fan. I have had refrigerators do fine until the fan motor warms up and you are away, it stops. Don't think you should use the refrigerator until the fan is fixed. Sea Breeze

SOURCE: the freezer side is freezing. The fresh food side

There is an opening on the lower portion of the wall that separates the two sides. check to see if this is closed. Sometimes, this happens in cleaning, etc. If it is open, reset the refrigerator setting at the top of the unit and see if the opening opens.

If that is not the problem, look inside the freezer down near the bottom at the back wall. There is a breather vent, I will call it, there. Check to see if it is frozen over or has excessive ice.

If it does, it probably is the Thermostat. There are two names used for the Thermostat in the parts/repair business. Some refer to it as Thermostat and some use the term "Metal Clip". One in the same. You can purchase this item from Appliance Parts or any appliance parts provider and put it on yourself as I did or you can call a repair person which will cost considerable more.

BEFORE COMMENCING ANY REPAIR, BE SURE YOU UNPLUG THE UNIT FROM THE ELCTRICAL SOURCE.

Now to get the bugger in. Take all food out, take shelves out, get approppriate screwdriver and remove screws from back panel and remove panel. You will see the Metal Clip/Thermostat clipped onto a brass tube that has some lead wires connected. Observe their allignment, unplug gently, remove old Metal Clip, Insert new Metal clip being sure to connect the wires. Put everything back together. Leave shelves and food out, until you see the ice melts to be sure everything is okay. I did this to mine when this happened to me. Ice won't melt instantly, but in a bit of time will. Good Luck. Let me know if it works for you.

NOTE: This
is a multi-solution answer since I don't have all the tech from your question to pinpoint your problem
But the solution is in here generically, if you read and study the solutions very, very carefully.
First I would check cold control. Thats where you turn it off, if your temp is not warm. it can
be defective and not shutting off. If your temp is warm proceed with the following.
I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if FREEZER CONTROL is turned warmer which makes REF. colder or vice versa.
Also this might be a common Defrost problem, Ice
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath

WATER SPLASHING IN FREEZER AT ICEMAKER
THE FILL TUBE IN BACK OF REFRIGERATOR CAN SLIP
AGAINST THE FILL RESERVOIR CAUSING A PARTIAL BLOCKAGE
OR BECOME CLOGGED WITH ICE.
REMOVE THE ICEMAKER AND INSPECT THE FILL TUBE.
RUN WATER IN TUBE TO ELININATE BLOCKAGE AND CHECK
TEMP IN FREEZER. IF TEMP IS BELOW 0 DEGREES, THATS
OVERKILL AND USUALLY A WASTE OF ELECTRICITY TO KEEP IT THAT COLD, NOT TO MENTION THE FILL TUBE FREEZING UP

Issue with Kenmore Refrigerator/Freezer

ok,1st check on fridge side toward upper back of the top and feel for air coming thru, and there is another one down possibly behind crisper .I had this same deal. Had to do total defrost,, put food in cooler,, theres two blower fans in these types of fridges,,one in the bottom back,, and one in the back of the frezzer,, I used an old hair dryer and let it blow warm to top interior of frezzer,, careful not to let any cords hang/drop in any water!!,ok once done dry out as much water as possible, turn fridge on set both controls to 4,when fridge kicks on do the feel test,, you may need to close the frezzer door, air should be felt near top inside of fridge,if so than shut fridge side and feel inside frezzer near bottom and air should be felt,, side-by-side need to circulate air from frezzer to fridge, then back to frezzer

This is by design. It should be warm. This is where the heat exchanger is located to save space.

No worries.... right now it is being over-worked until it reaches operating temp.

Fifteen years old.  Unless you are a fix-it fanatic like me and have lots of time to tinker (and like soft ice cream), it is probably time to replace it.

Freezer does not seem to keep things frozen in my refridgerator .

probable reason for this is that the thermostat controls freezer temp and freezer follows suit.
if temp in your garage is low ie in winter, then the fridge doesn't need to switch on and the freezer temp rises.
i know this sounds barmy but it is true
