Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have been using this Gateway DX4300-11 since January, with no problems until now (the fourth week of August). I recently had a problem similar to one described in many of the reviews for the DX4300-11 where the computer will not resume from sleep. The power light stays illuminated as though the machine were on, but will not respond to the mouse or keyboard as the computer normally would in sleep mode. Pressing the power button once does nothing. Holding the power button down 5-10 seconds does nothing (usually this would shut the computer off). The system has to be unplugged/switched off at the surge protector in order to be restarted. The day this started (two days ago), it happened all three times that the computer went to sleep. Then, yesterday, the computer started shutting itself off during normal operation. I opened up the side panel and cleaned all the dust out of the inside, and paid particular attention to the chip fan, because I thought it was overheating. However, when I started it back up, it shut itself off again after 20 minutes of normal use, with the power button illuminated, and had to be unplugged to shut off as before. Could this be a problem with the power supply? Or is it more likely that it's a more serious problem with the hard drive or processor?

Not sure but you could even have a virus i would try to redo it back to factory settings if you know how to.

My passport expires in August, I have travel plans to Spain on 13 May for 1 week. Is my current passport still valid?

passport is valid until august when it expires, however traveling to spain require you to have a valid passport that still valid 3 months after you plan to leave spain.

as it would be very close to that if your passport expires late august, i would recommend to get a new passport. they are valid for 10 years. and if it saves you trouble while out traveling it be worth it :)

My computer settings do not match the router settings...not sure how to change

The important thing is that the IP Address is the same 3 Octets and the fourth Octet is unique. I.E. The Three Octets are "192.168.1.?". The fourth Octet is something like "?.?.?.100" With this information are the two settings similar enough to connect¿ If you still want to change the settings go to Control Panel / Network Connections / Local area Connection / IP settings, Properties and Use this IP Address. The First Three Octets Must be the same as the Routers First Three Octets. The last Octet must be within "0" and "255" cannot be those Two numbers nor the IP Address of the Router and the "Subnet Mask" will auto fill in for you but will be "255.255.255.0". The "Default Gateway" and the "DNS Server" will be the same IP address of the Gateway unless you already have a specific DNS server preference. Good Luck

When you get home, do the following:
  1. Connect your computer to the modem with an Ethernet cable.
  2. Go to start -> Control panel -> Network Connections
  3. Find a connection called "Local Area Connection"
  4. Right-click and choose "Properties"
  5. Scroll down until you see "Internet Protocol TCP/IP"
  6. Double click it.
  7. Make sure that both buttons for "Obtain...automatically" are checked.
  8. Click "OK" until all windows are closed.
  9. Open a command prompt (Win-key+R) and type "cmd"
  10. In the following window type "ipconfig /release"
  11. When that is finished type "ipconfig /renew"
  12. When that is finished, type "ipconfig /all > C:\fixya.txt". This will create a text file on your C: drive.
  13. Copy the contents of the file and post it here as a comment, if you still can not access a webpage.

I've had to occasionally put the charger on my 2001 Maxima starting about January (it's now August). In the last 3 weeks it has gone from maybe once a month to twice a week. My voltages read good but I...

Oldpglyr, In my opinion shunt "load" meters are hard on batteries and I've built them. If your car is charging the battery between 13.5 volts to 15.0 volts then your charging system is good. You already know it's the battery, what are you waiting for, to get stranded? Get that baby replaced while your in control of when it happens. Dale

2002 toyota engine, oil sludgecaused my car to stopped and now needs overhaul

Complain to Toyota, they are fixing some of these car for free. Here is the explanation and the list of problem vehicles.

Oil sludge or black sludge is a solid or gel in motor oil caused by the oil gelling or solidifying, usually at temperatures lower than 100 degrees Celsius. Sludge can be a major contributor to Internal combustion engine problems, and can require the engine to be replaced, if the damage is severe. Sludge is usually caused by the presence of water in the oil, and can accumulate with use. Ways to minimize sludge production and accumulation includes performing frequent oil changes, using synthetic oil, and following the manufacturer's engine maintenance routine.
The following engines were reported by the Center for Auto Safety and/or their manufacturers to have a problem with sludge accumulation:

  • 1996-2001 Toyota 3.0 L 1MZ V6
  • 1996-2001 Toyota 5SFE I4

Try doing a system reset. Not sure it that's the term they use but that option basically resets the tv to factory default settings. It's in the menu somewhere. I've done the reset twice already for a similar problem. Solved it each time.

    Go to:
    http://www.emersonelectronics.ca/emerson/en/product/details/VLJT600
    or
    http://www.emersonelectronics.ca/emerson/en/category/list/694

The solution appears to be common for all recent Emerson SmartSet(tm) radios (BTW it's not the clock fault, it's the law).

Remarkably Emerson foresaw this, so here we go.

Short version (may require three hands :-) )

    DST start:
Press and hold MONTH/DATE and ALARM 1 buttons for at least 3 seconds until the display changes to something like "4 F" (Fourth month, First week) alternating with something like "4. 1" (April 1st, for 2007) or "4. 6" (April 6th, for 2008). While holding down the MONTH/DATE and ALARM 1 buttons, now press the DOWN or "-" Set button (3 times) until "3F2" shows (Third month, second week) alternating with something like "3.11) (March 11th, for 2007) or "3. 9" (March 9th, for 2008). Let go of all buttons and we are now half done.

    DST end:
Press and hold MONTH/DATE and ALARM 2 buttons for at least 3 seconds until the display changes to something like "10 L" (Tenth month, Last week) alternating with something like "10.28" (October 28th, for 2007) or "10.26" (October 26th, for 2008). While holding down the MONTH/DATE and ALARM 2 buttons, now press the UP or "+" Set button (1 time) until "11 F" shows (Eleventh month, first week) alternating with something like "11. 4" (November 4th, for 2007) or "11. 2" (November 2nd, for 2008). Let go of all buttons and we are now done.

This should remain until either the lithium battery fails or Congress undoes its work.

BTW the Emerson addendum has a history error. The time change in the first Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October did not start in 1966, but in 1987. Before that starting in 1966 the standard was set at the last Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October. Except for 1974, when it was January 6th, 1974 (DST start) and October 27th, 1974 (DST end) and in 1975 when it was February 23rd, 1975 (DST start) and October 26th, 1975 (DST end). Before 1966, state and local governments had many different rules. Source: http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/e.html
