Probably they didn't set up the front USB ports when they were wiring the computer. If you have the motherboard schematic it will show where the front USB ports connect on the board. Best have a technician take a look at it to determine and hook it up.
Hope this is of some help. Bud

I plugged in my webcam but nothing happens

Hi,

Firstly you need to determine if the problem lies with your webcam or with your USB port.
You can determine this by plugging a different device into the same port, such as a flash stick or external hard drive.
Also test your webcam by plugging it into a different computer. If another computer fails to detect your webcam you may have to replace your webcam as they are relatively inexpensive and not worth repairing.

Best wishes,

Why the camera does'nt appear?

1. the USB port on your computer does not work -- try some other USB device (such as a USB memory-stick) in that slot, to see if any device in that slot is recognized

2. the camera does not work -- try connecting it to some other computer to check.

3. your computer is missing the device-drivers for the USB ports -- try some other USB device, and/or look in "Device Manager" for "unknown" device, or a yellow question-mark on some device.

4. you need to install the software from the CD-ROM that came with the camera.

My 5v logitech camera will not turn on and i have no idea whats up with it, any assistance would be helpful

Hello

Just a suggestion: Windows can disable the USB ports to save power. This setting is in Windows and it does not matter if the computer is a desktop or laptop. You can test to see if this is the cause. Turn the computer completely off, let it sit for 5 seconds or so and then power it back on. If the web camera turns on and works after the reboot, the Operating System is powering the USB ports down and causing the issue.

You can tell Windows to leave the USB port powered on all of the time. Click START, and go to the CONTROL PANEL. Double click the SYSTEM icon, go to the HARDWARE tab and then click the DEVICE MANAGER button.

This brings up a new window that lists all of the hardware that is in your computer. Click the + (plus sign) next to the UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS entry. Scroll down to each USB ROOT HUB entry, right click each entry and click PROPERTIES.

This brings up a new window, click the POWER MANAGEMENT tab. Remove the check mark from the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

Repeat for all USB ROOT HUB entries, click OK to save your changes.

If you have installed the drivers etc. then see if any of the help below applies to you.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especialy true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

LifeCam VX-5000 not recognized by USB Port

You are not suppose to connect the camera to the USB port untill the installing software asks you to DO SO. Then connect it and when the installation is complete it will work.

Follow the instructions below.

Then to use it on the Web, do this.
Web Camera’s have to be setup on the program they are to be used with. Just installing the camera on your computer does not set it up to broadcast on messengers or Skype.

Each program has Options that have to be setup in order for the Audio and Video to function properly.

3. Next go to the Menu Bar on right side, click on “ “Action.”
4. Go to “TOOLS” and click “Audio and Video Setting” and follow the instructions.
NOTE: Your audio and video should work. Enjoy.

When done both the Audio and Video will function properly so you can chat and see family or friends you are connected to.

D. AIM (AOL) Messenger

1. On the VIM sign-in window click on Edit.
2. Then click on Settings Enhanced IM.

If you are currently participating in an AOL Live Video IM session, a message will display: You must disconnect the current AOL Live Video IM conversation before running setup. Would you like to disconnect now? Click the Yes button.
2. The Audio and Video Tuning Wizard will appear to help you verify that your camera, speakers and microphone are working properly. Follow the on-screen prompts.
Notes:
· The first time you use AOL Live Video IM, a message will display: Would you like to first check your audio and video settings? Click the Yes button. USB Port Unrecognizable

It seems that many people are still getting the 'USB Device not Recognized' problem from time to time. Unfortunately there is no easy fix.

Firstly, it's recommended that you make sure every one of your motherboard drivers are completely up-to-date, but you probably already knew that.

In XP, after a USB port isn't used for a long while the USB driver built into the OS sets the OHCI controller to suspend. When you plug a device back in, it can sometimes fail to 'wake up' properly. This problem was supposedly fixed in SP1 but there is a related registry hack that may still be able to help.

Run regedt32.exe and navigate to;

HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Usb

Create the Usb key if it doesn't already exist. Under this key, create a new DWORD value called DisableSelectiveSuspend and give it a value of 1. Then restart the PC.

A long shot perhaps, but I recall having similar problems with a USB hub built into my Microsoft keyboard and adding this key seemed to solve it. It wouldn't hurt in trying icon_smile.png.

Alternatively, removing all entries relating to USB in Device Manager and all associated USB drivers will force XP into refreshing the USB driver stack.

Begin by unplugging all USB devices, then use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall any USB driver software. Next, boot up into safe mode and go to Device Manager. Once in device manager make sure 'Show hidden devices' is checked under the View menu. Uninstall all device entries in this order;

1. USB peripheral devices (printers etc.)

2. HID and/or Composite USB (Human Interface Devices) You're using PS/2 input devices so you may not have this entry.

3. USB Root Hub(s)

4. USB Host Controller(s) (Universal or Enhanced Host Controllers)

Then boot back into Windows (not safe mode) and it should populate the Root Hubs & Host controllers again. Proceed to plug your USB devices back in, starting with your powered hub. Be aware that most USB printers and scanners need to have their drivers installed first before you plug them in.

Hopefully some of this may be of help, let us know how you get on.
