I need to calibrate the pull of espresso for each shot on my espresso machine. How do I do this?

Press spiral button and hold for 8 secs, lights will flash, then press button you want to program when you get correct volume press stop button. Some machines need a key to program them, check to see if there is a lock on the front of machine. If you have the model with the cronos pads you do not have to worry about a lock.

I'm getting too much water for a shot making it more like a shot and a half. How do I reduce the volume of water?


That could either be an increase in water pressure or the shot timer needs to be reset to a lower value.

Hi I have one of these and I know it is frustrating at first. There is quite a lot out there on the net about \'pulling a great shot\' some of it conflicting some of it intensely obsessive.

So here is one I found useful

Number one buy decent coffee.

Like all espresso makers it the combination of grind and tamp that will lead to a good shot, this is especially true with the La Pavoni.

You must grid your own beans for this machine, or at a push if you buy from a roasting house get them to do a selection of different (fine espresso) grinds for you, mark the packs and try them all and select the best. Here in the UK coffee sold pre-ground is just to course for this machine.

So if you are grinding your own you need to experiment and every time you buy new beans you will notice you have to do it again to calibrate the grind.

A grind will be to course or the tamp to light if the coffee flows to easily and takes less than about12-15 seconds with a relativity moderate pressure on the handle again this is something you need to get a feel for. you really don\'t want to be straining to pull the shot as this means the grind is to fine or the tamp is to hard, so it is possible to have a good grind coupled with a wrong tamp.

I tend to use just two finger to pull down on the handle this way I can feel more easily how the flow is going I also have a look at the coffee coming out of the spout when you have it just right the flow kind of bends at the top rather than going straight. Also it can be quite easy to damage the machine but pulling too hard on the handle.

If you find that you are pulling down for to long and nothing or next to nothing is coming out then the grind is to fine or the tamp is to hard or both. I think in general I would try adjusting your tamp first before changing the grind.

I suggest experimentation and stick with it, it really is worth it when you start to pull great coffee shots.

Also look out for overheating the brew-head this can lead to a bad taste it can get to hot after pulling 4 or 5 shots try wrapping a damp cloth round it for a while to bring the temp back down.

So I am sorry if I have rambled on a bit but there are no hard and fast rules here.

I keep hearing how this machine makes great crema but I'm about ready to toss my machine in the dump. It seems like the water comes out way too fast no matter how I work the grinds or tamp it. Can someone contact me about what might be wrong?

How do I increase grouphead pressure on la marzocco linea 2 group?


To increase dispense pressure you turn the adjustment screw at the pump. When pulling a shot (use espresso) on one group the bottom needle of the gauge should read 9bars while pulling the shot.

Double shot won't work, single does


Try using without the portafilter, if it works then the problem is in the grind or the pressure used to tamp the coffee.

Could be a couple of things. You will know if the pressure is bouncing around by watching your gauges. You want to pull between 9-10 bars when pulling a shot. The programming issue could be the fact that if it is used it could have what I like to call
a touchy brain board. Those do have to replaced every so often depending on how much use the machine gets. You can reprogram whenever shots start pulling bad until you have no choice but to replace the brain board. They are cashy. To program: push the stop and pitcher button at the same time and all lights will start flashing on that head. Have your grind set, use a lined shot glass and measuure your shots according to short or long, watching the flow, crema etc. The ultimate shots pull between 25 and 28 seconds.

Water flow


You will have to adjust your shot timing, and possibly your grind. To program the shot timing, hold the Brew Stop button until all of the brew lights come on; That means all of the buttons are ready to program. Next, pull some grind for your portafilter and push the button you want to program. For a single, you want to pull a 1 oz shot in about 15-20 seconds; longer for a double. When you push the button, the shot will start to pull; when the shot is complete, push the button again to set it. Then do the same for the next button. Each group needs to be programed separately. Holding the the Brew Stop button again will turn out the remaining lights and save your programming to that point. As to the grind, you want to have the grind fine enough to give you a quality shot in the right amount of time. Good Luck!
