The Grinding Noise has something to do with the scanner not the Printing Part, I think the scanner could have something stuck on the moving tray....!!!!!!

I am having the EXACT same issue. I am using VueScan. The tray goes in , the steppers seem to be fine, then when it's trying to scan, the steppers act as though they are underpowered and make a disconcerting rumbling noise but the tray doesn't move. This just suddenly cropped up, I never move or use this thing.

There are a couple possibilities that can cause the problem.

1. you need to unlock the scanner. There is a lock at the side of the scanner that could be in the locked position which is preventing the scanner from moving. you can use a nickel or penny or screwdriver to turn it to release it.

2. the tab that is holding the gear is broken
3. the glass is not attached 100% to the upper case and the scanner is hitting it when trying to scan.
if its 2 or 3, you might be better off getting a replacement.

Unless you forgot and tried to use it locked…then unlocked it after, it seems unlikely that changing the ink could directly affect anything related to the scanner. So especially if it still scans and now just makes more noise then before, we can reasonably say it isn’t a faulty locking mechanism and that the gears are probably not stripped, which would either stop it or not. So you’re looking at either something simple like the gear assembly being dry, shifted slightly, etc. or the safety by the lock that makes noise to tell you the device is locked is stuck somehow. The one can be tested by removing the little plastic safety that makes the noise when the scanner is turned on and locked; the other you might be able to test with some WD40 and see if it runs quieter.

The most common problem is that the pulley breaks, you might be able to see it through the glass. looks where the belt goes, and see if the pulley is broken.

also, some people forget to unlock the locking mechanism when the unit gets moved, the locking switch is on the side.

I lost the CD of the hp jst scanner 6200c, but i down loaded the program on line. However, when I scan nothing appears on the screen and the scanner makes a lot of noise. The light does go on on the scanner but it doesnt scan i get a blank

Open ur scanner ,s back body(its very easy)remove belt.. just clean scanner, s belt and dust from scanner with soft cloth..put it belt again..

Unless you're scanning heavy items such as books that would put enough pressure down to prevent the scanning head from unit, then I think you need service.

If it just seems to be "stuck" on static, you probably need to adjust the Squelch. Try turning the squelch down until the static stops.
If you haven't programmed any frequencies into the banks, scanning won't do anything. Press "Func" and "Scan" to perform a Search. This way, if you find a frequency with a lot of chatter, you can program it into a bank for scanning later.
The easiest thing to do is to find frequencies for your local police, fire, etc. on the internet & program them into the various banks on the scanner.
