Question about HP LaserJet 4L Printer

2 Answers

When I returned from a long vacation and turned on my 4L printer, all four lights came on. Nothing will print, no matter what I do, nor will the four lights go off. I have never had a problem with this printer the whole time I've had it. What can I do?

I opened up everything and cleaned it as best I could. I could not figure out how to remove the fuser unit, so I relied on blowing out as much as I could. There was a fair amount of dust inside and everything appears clean now. The problem persists.

All four lights come on when I turn on the machine. When I press the button, the machine starts its cycle. After a few seconds, nothing and the lights are still on.

I do not get a secondary message, no matter how many times I power cycle or how long I leave the machine off before restarting it.

What puzzles me is why the machine worked perfectly up to the minute I shut off everything to leave on vacation, and then when I returned several weeks later all four lights are on.

Fortunately, I do have a new toner cartridge on hand. I switched it, but I still have all four lights on, even after powercycling.

Yep, guess I have to have it serviced--for the first time since I bought it over 15 years ago. I have no complaint, eh?

    Thanks for your help.

According to the HP support instructions this condition of all 4 lights remaining on requires printer service if the power cycle fails. Remove power input to printer, wait and put back in.

Have you been able to get the secondary error code?
see instructions on this page.

It is an issue with storage of toners etc. that can cause problems when you leave printers unused for a longer period.

Have you tried to change the toner cartridge? It might be the time to service the printer. Trying to repair something like this without proper tools to adjust the mechanical components may not solve the problem.

Four lights means Fatal Error. There could be several causes, but first try this. Press and hold down the "Go" Button (in your case, it should be the Blue button). Once you hear the printer's cycle sound, release the button and wait for few seconds. If nothing happens, remove all the cartridges and the drum from the respective compartments. Now turn off the printer, pull out the fuser unit and check for any foreign particles or any broken pieces of paper carefully. Even a small piece of paper can create this havoc if it's stuck inside the passage. Even a piece of broken thread or something similar materials. If possible, use a blower to clean the unit. After you are done with the cleaning, power on the machine (Once you press the power button, keep pressing the cancel button till it's fully booted) and install the drum and the cartridges, now check whether it's gone or not.

If the problem persists, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

HP LaserJet 4L quit working It's connected to my PC and it's on. All 4 lights are on; 2 green and 2 orange. When I try to print, the paper goes through but nothing is printed on the paper.

Empty cartridge maybe?
Otherwise it's simple: selt-test page(by printer button) printed ok - it's outer problem. Self-page is blank - it's inner problem. And so on... use Golden Section method

My HP LasserJet 4L printer does not go on. What could be the ptoblem? No sound, lights, nothing. Cables are good.

Yes, I had this exact same problem!! My printer would not come on simply after coming back from a two week vacation and when I switched on the surge protector, nothing happened. I found that the switching transistor in the switch mode power supply section of the DC Controller board failed!! (Q201) If your Laserjet 4L is as old as mine, remember that the switch mode power supply is always on standby, even when the printer is in " Intelligent Off" mode. It has to be ready for a print job at anytime and therefore the power supply really is always working. Therefore the switchmode power supply is almost always the place to look for a dead printer!! This field effect transistor (FET) ,(Q201)is mounted to a heatsink and handles various amount of current up to 4 amps, and can get very hot. So, in the many years since these printers were made, it has switched on and off many times, and dealt a lot of thermal stress. I searched the web for the replacement 2SK1351 transistor, and found that MCM had it for $8.88, but is currently out of stock. I ended up ordering it from littlediode.com, which is in the UK, for 5.47 plus about 6.50 shipping. I didn't mind waiting a few days for it to arrive. I hope that this helps!!!

HP laserjet 4L wont print from computer

Normal 0 Driver could be corrupt.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
