Sounds like the video cable is bad from the vcr to the tv, or is not connected to the same input as the audio.
check to see if they are the same.
Thanks Guy9

We have an 11 year old sony trinitron fv-32fs12 that is now getting a blue screen. I saw where there is a way to fix this using the remote control. Do you know how?

Blue screen means it's not getting a signal, so check your input setting. If it's set to TV and you're connected to a cable/satellite box then you probably have to put the set on channel 3 or 4. If you're set to AV1,2,3 etc make sure you have a good signal going to the input selected. I doubt that there's a problem with your TV.

Dvd/vcr hook up to sony tv, not playing picture on sony tv

The simplest is Video out an the DVD to Video in on TV, Yellow, red and white. If the TV has component input this is better. That is Green, blue and red for the video plus red and white for the audio.

T.V. shuts off when I try to play a DVD in the built-in player

Try putting in a VCR tape let it load and hit stop. If the set stays on it's the VCR deck causing the problem. It will be either be bad sensors or LED or possibly the mode switch. Let me know if this helps.

Are you sure the VCR is getting your channel 5 signal? The TV when on ch 3 is seeing whatever the vcr is putting out.

Remote and buttons on tv do not work

There could be a few issues at play here. The first and most common would be a spill in the front of the unit or excessive Windex has dripped off the screen and down on the keypad causing corrosion. If there are shorts on that board they can lock the micro and the remote is useless as well.

The other, and more expensive issue would be a bad micro controller all together.
