Question about Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

I own a canon s2 is power shot. Symptoms began with the digital zoom beeping and the screen going blank when invoked to draw an image closer. After a periood of time of avoiding the zoom, the camera lense stuck inside and gave an e18 message when beeping. I could still survey old pics but can't take new pics as the screen is blank and the lense won't come out. The warranty expired 10 months ago, I've tried forced air, changing batteries and mem card and pressing on the lense. The lense is off to one side when looking strraight at it.

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel after dropping it. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hope the advise is useful.

Regards
Andrea

How to do a close up shot?

  • If you mean you want to know how to zoom (bring distant things closer): on the back of your camera (on the screen's side), near the top, there will be a couple of buttons marked "T" (meaning Teli: brings closer) and "W" (meaning Wide: covers a wider range) pressing the "T" will bring far images closer.
  • If you are referring to taking pictures of objects very close to the lens: Find the option called "macro focus" (commonly accessed by pressing the "left" key while in normal photo mode) this will let your camera focus at very small distances (about 5cm from the lens)

Dark on lcd screen when turn on. no display or picture.

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras, especially the S2 IS. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help. Also pay attention to the blurb there about Canon possibly fixing this for free (for the S2 IS only).

I have the Canon power shot s2 is digita. I cant

You might have a mecanical problem at the lens. The only way to surely fix this is at a local electronist or Canon dealer. Trying to repair it yourself can render the camera unusable and unrepairable.

The display does not come on, there is a "busy" sign flashing

Sounds like the problem Canon had to fix for me with my S2 IS which did the same thing. My camera shot blank pics. It turned out to be a stuck shutter. The camera makes all the usual noises, but the shutter is stuck closed.

E 18 problem

the E18 means the lens system has a problem. I had it with my S2 and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Eventually it stopped working. The only solution was sending it to repair, they changed the lens system.
