Question about Mitsubishi VS-50707 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Mitsubishi VS50707 - picture went out while TV was on. Sound still works. if i turn it off for awhile then back on, all three color tubes come on and flicker together for awhile before going out again. while they are on, the color on the screen is not very good.

The most common failure is the convergence IC's for what you are describing. They are large black flat-pack items mounted on aluminum, finned heatsinks. They will have numbers on them like STK392-110 or STK392-120. Yours may be different but most start with STK392-___. There may be some resistors that overheated and failed,... they are usually mounted near the IC's. They will be darkened towards the middle area. Google "Mitsubishi convergence repair kit" and you'll find suppliers who will sell you what you need , quite often with complete instructions. Here's the first one I found: http://www.tvrepairkits.com/xcart/home.php?cat=2638 This link is for your model number.

thanks for the info. i'm trying to make sure this is my problem though. i checked the error code and showed a 1-2 or "no error found." do you still think it is the convergence IC?

Another common problem for these sets is leakage of coolant from one of the crt's. It usually gets on the signal board and sometimes on the main board. It errodes the copper connections between components and gets worse with time. If this is your problem "the sooner the better" for repair.

  • dan Aug 25, 2010

i think that's it actually. i did find a drop of liquid on the board and it appeared to be coming from the left-most picture tube (as you look at it from the back). i wiped it off. what is the fix now? new CRT? new board? starting to sound pricey.

thanks for your help by the way.

Sometimes the board is salvageable if it is removed and cleaned. You can spray it with board cleaner/solvent available at electronics parts houses,... let it dry thoroughly, reassemble, and test. If ok the next thing to do is shield the board from further leakage. Use a thick piece of cardboard and slope it above the board so as any more dripping runs down the cardboard away from the board. This is acceptable if the leak is VERY MINOR,... otherwise the leak will have to be fixed. Things start getting real complicated at this point and I would recommend you take it to someone.

Sony rear projection tv kp-51ws500 no picture. Standby light blinking red 5 times. TV has sound but no picture. Before the picture went out TV was turning green then red and had curved lines going...

Blinking 5 times is a sign of at least one of the three video tubes overcurrenting, which will eventually shut off the image. It happened with me but with my red tube over-illuminating. The solution is to reduce the drive intensity on the offending tube. Remove the front speaker grill. Behind it you will find a panal with 6 pots, these are drive (brightness) and focus for each of the 3 colors. My fix was to turn down the red intensity to zero and (after a restart) bring it up slightly till the image was acceptable, colorwise. I did have to adjust all 3 intensities to get a decient color balance along with the focus's on all three tubes (the drive intensity adjustments will knock the focus out as you go). I used the auto-adjust patterns to focus on, and you may want to use a stationary image, such as a paused DVD scene or a video game, to focus on. I still haven't found a way to clear the error code, but I learned to ignore it. The result isn't perfect, but it's very acceptable and it'll do for awhile (and it didn't cost anything!). Good Luck.

Mitsubishi Diamond Series T.V.

When a tv (Rear proyection) shows this coloration is the meanning that the red color is not there (the red color is generated by a red CRT). Now it can be really bad not having the tube working but before conclution make sure of this: (and if the red color gets back then the tube is ok)
  • is this condition the same in all inputs? or the picture looks ok with a different video source (VCR, DVD other)
  • are the menu letters same as the picture looks or are they fine?
If we cannot see any red color back with this testing, still chances that a technician find an electronic problem that make the tube to be off. so don't rush conclusions and get to the end to save the tv with out replacing the red tube, but if all was done and nothing then the tv needs the tube replacing.
