If you cannot DIY or a friend that can help the putchase another power adapter. If you wire the plug incorrectly the you could damage your laptop and which will cost a great deal more than the power adapter.
A power lead for that should be available from most electrical/electronic stores. Take the old chewed up one with you as a samle of the plug type. If you don't have any luck, go to HVC's web site and download a list of dealers in your area. Hope this helps.
Check and verify the AC adapter is working.
If it is then you can try removing the battery with the adapter connected try to boot the laptop.
If it boots, reinstall the battery and check to see if it is charging.
Hope this helps.
I don't think you are dealing with a short in your system. Your battery is probably dead and/or needs to be charged. See if your new power cord will work and will turn your computer on. Make sure that you have the exact power cord that your specific system calls for, because not all laptop power cords are the same. I mean you can't just use any laptop power cord; it has to be one that is rightly built specifically for your laptop system.
First you need to test your adapter first not the power cord.Check that your adapter can give out according to the adapter spec..maybe 16-19ou V.If it does and still you laptop don't turn on then you have motherboard problem.
First, you need to check the one that you got for replacement is the correct adapter for your system. If it matches with the old one, make sure that the ac adapter light (LED) is on when you plug it the wall outlet only. When you plug it in the portable and if your ac adapter LED blinks out (turns off) then the motherboard needs to be replaced or else the ac adapter is not working and needs another replacement. Call Dell and have it replaced if you just bought it.
